DARRELL ISSA, PATRICK MCHENRY GET NUTTY FOR THEIR CORPORATE BACKERS

It was a contentious day for the Oversight Committee, with high-profile testimony from EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes, and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau chief Elizabeth Warren. And twice in two hearings, committee Republicans accused their witnesses of lying to Congress, under oath. It started with Issa suggesting that Secretary Hayes was lying (albeit without coming right out and making the accusation) and was followed later in the day when Rep. Patrick McHenry, presiding over a subcommittee hearing, didn't bother with equivocation and flat out accused Elizabeth Warren of lying under oath (video). As has become familiar territory with this Oversight Committee, both Issa and McHenry's positions have relatively little basis in reality, but align quite well with the interests of their contributors.

It's well established that Darrell Issa and other Republican committee members have benefitted tremendously in their campaigns from Big Oil -- so much so that Issa allows oil companies to use his committee to put on press conferences. So it was no surprise when he laid into the EPA and Interior officials today calling for dramatic increases in oil drilling. It didn't trouble Issa on the one-year anniversary of the Gulf Oil Spill that no major safety changes had occurred, he called for more drilling anyways. It didn't bother Issa to hold an entire stacked hearing on the safety of 'fracking' just a couple weeks after a major spill of fracking fluid in Pennsylvania. Because of course, those checks will keep coming. Issa and committee Republicans received nearly half a million dollars in Big Oil money before today's call for more oil drilling after all.
