Morning Joe just asked: What caused the rich to get richer/poor to get poorer over last 30 years?
Edited on Wed Dec-15-10 06:55 AM by BzaDem
He literally sounded dumbfounded when a commentator at the table told him the statistics, and Joe asked how that could have happened over the last 30 years.

16. Viewed from the perspective of the "American dream"...
Viewed from the perspective of the "American dream", what happened is simple: Poor people have been getting dumber and lazier in the last 30 years, so the smarter, more hard working people get richer.

No, I don't believe this at all, but it's basically what many, many Americans think has happened.

The education system, religious institutions, mass media, the entertainment industry, they all contribute to selling the American dream, and ensuring that each and every individual who gets screwed over by the system can look in the mirror and blame themselves for their situation.

That's what we're up against. And it isn't just Fox news.

19. It's because rich people work harder.
Poor people are poor because they're lazy, or on drugs, or a minority. Rich people are rich because they are hard working, non-addicted, and white. See in America, the harder you work, the more money you get. So really, we should be praising them for they're industrious nature... in fact... let's give them a tax cut. It's only right.

31. Crazy analysis.
Some rich people make good choices, others got their money from family connections. Many poor become rich by way of industry and making good choices, many rich become poor. Hard work is only part of the recipe, keeping one's word and delivering a fair product for a fair price is most important. There is nothing more pathetic than a rich person that is an empty shell of a person.

29. tax cuts is only part of the reason
And the whole tax code is written to benefit the rich. But don't also forget NAFTA and and the Chinese trade agreements. Millions of jobs have been shipped over seas.

Also, there are a lot more immigrants, both legal and illegal. The legal immigrants (H1B and other VISA's) drive down white collar wages. The illegal immigrants drive down wages for unskilled labor (I remember when construction and landscaping were well paid jobs....and in those days, we could afford to pay good wages for those services).

I know a lot of people here defend immigration. I am not bigotted (I am half mexican). But I've seen the wages fall in the past 25 years.

Dead Intern Joe is a blind ideologue. He will never see that the supply side policies he championed is the primary cause of the wealth inequality.
