Progressive Catholics push for church changes during Detroit conference
Detroit — Catholics from across the country are calling for change in the Catholic Church during a three-day conference this weekend in Detroit.

More than 2,000 people have already shown up at Cobo Center for the American Catholic Council to discuss their push for changes in the church such as allowing priests to marry and increasing the role of women in the Church. The conference began Friday evening and will end Sunday with Mass.

The goal is to inspire people to take what they learn back to their churches, friends and neighbors, said Janet Hauter, chairwoman for the event.

1. I wish them luck
but I doubt any of those changes will be enacted while Benedict XVI is pope. He is very conservative, likely moreso than John Paul II.

3. It's not that religions need to drop their outdated beliefs
It's a matter of people being intelligent enough to drop religion.

6. They're only aware
of what their leaders tell them she said. Hell, I tried reading "Atlas Shrugged" just so I could discuss it intelligently.

Bored the hell out of me within one chapter.

8. I had a friend....

I had a friend who left the Catholic priesthood to get married and then became an Anglican priest. He was one of the best choir directors around and the Catholic Church lost that talent to the Anglican Church.

My experience suggests that the American Catholic Church is 30 or 40 years behind the Canadian Catholic Church just as many Americans are 30 or 40 years behind Canadians in general, based on the few US Catholic churches I have attended.
