Rick Perry and the "Joel's Army" cult.
If Governor Rick Perry (R) of Texas runs for president of the United States, he will have one of the most unusual and specific bases for his platform of any candidate in many decades—the spiritual visions of the ancient Hebrew prophet Joel.

Perry has jumped on the "Joel's Army" bandwagon, claiming in his promotional message for his The Response prayer and fasting event in Houston in August: "Some problems are beyond our power to solve, and according to the Book of Joel, Chapter 2, this historic hour demands a historic response."

Perry has sent out a letter to all 50 governors of the USA, saying that:

"Given the trials that beset our nation and world, from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and continued debasement of our culture, I believe it is time to convene the leaders from each of our United States in a day of prayer and fasting, like that described in the book of Joel."

Perry invites all the nation's governors to this event, telling them: "I believe it will take a great amount of prayer, and a renewed commitment to spiritual principles, to get our nation back on track. Let us not delay in doing what is right for our people and their future."

In any sane political climate, this alone should consign him to the "lunatic to be ignored" category.

1. Republicans get together and fast? I don't think so.
Plus, more sex workers will likely flock to the city of that event.

Too bad Rick Perry et al won't resign their jobs and stay home to fast and pray. Leave the governing to people who will be responsible to the people.

7. I don't know that they will "flock" to the city
but I'm sure that extra sex workers will be brought in. Some will get the money, most will have it passed to their pimps.

3. We are going to observe his prayer and fasting event
by skipping church and going out for brunch. Should be easy to get a table that day.

4. Christians don't normally bother with OT history; that's the point of the NT.

a lot by using the OT. Obviously, the NT was written by left leaning commie sympathizers.

6. Yes, that "feed the hungry, clothe the naked" socialist nonsense
can't hold a candle to the blood and violence and debauchery of the OT.

Why pay any attention to that "I bring you a new law" guy when the Old Law is so much more fun.

I worked for a "Christian" guy who cheated his employees, double-crossed his business clients, told prodigious lies and sat in church every Sunday. He urged us employees to pray for our country. I suppose he hoped we wouldn't notice how badly we were being screwed over if we were busy praying.

Clarification: I am not "against religion" -- I am against religious hypocrites. I've known several truly religious decent people but I've had much less problem with hypocrites since avoiding the churchly set.
