Vietnamese protest China amid rising tensions

Vietnamese protesters carry a banner with a Vietnamese slogan reading, "China must respect and execute the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea," during a protest demanding China to stay out of their waters following China's increased activities around the Spratly Islands and other disputed areas, in Hanoi, Vietnam on Sunday June 12, 2011. HANOI, Vietnam (AP) -- Hundreds of people in Vietnam launched a third week of protests against China on Sunday amid escalating tensions in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, where both countries recently conducted live-fire military drills.

About 300 people gathered near the Chinese Embassy in the capital, Hanoi, and marched through the streets, yelling "Down With China!" and demanding that their powerful northern neighbor stay out of Vietnam's territory. Crowds also gathered in southern Ho Chi Minh City.

"We will fight for our country if the nation needs us," said student Nguyen Manh Ha, 20. "Not only me, but all Vietnamese people will die to protect our territory."

2. Not sure if you ever noticed....but
The Chinese embassy in San Francisco, across from Japantown (aka nihonmachi) always seems to draw a crowd of protesters these days. I can't remember a day when there were not people sitting out in front with their various signs.

side note:
Always thought it was interesting that the Chinese embassy was built far, far away from Chinatown. You think there might be some resentment there? maybe?

4. I frequently see Taiwanese flags in Chinatown.
The Mainland government may not be welcome.

7. Most Chinese in SF Chinatown are proud of all of China, PRC included.
I live in Sacramento Chinatown, but visit SF often. Many Chinese were wearing PRC flag Olympic pins in 2008, for instance.

6. "China must respect and execute the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea,"
Now thats a catchy chant. It probably sounds better in Vietnamese.
