CNN Poll: Republicans want winner over ideology in 2012

By: CNN Political Unit

Washington (CNN) - Given the choice between a candidate who agrees with them on the issues or a candidate who can defeat President Barack Obama in 2012, a new national poll indicates Republicans overwhelming want a winner.

According to CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday, nearly seven out of ten Republicans say they would prefer a GOP presidential nominee who can top Obama in the next election, with 29 percent saying a nominee who agrees with them on every issue that matters the most is more important.

"Republicans are divided on their choice for the GOP nominee in 2012, but they are united in their desire to see Obama ousted from the White House," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

1. This is not a revelation. Since Obama has taken office the republicans have been doing anything to
see his administration fails

2. Tea Party Nation will back whomever the GOP nominates.
A few of the teaklan kooks were attempting to recruit me into their regressive ranks. I told them I have no interest for many reasons, including the fact that the tea parties are a front for the GOP.

3. but ...... those most likely to participate in the caucuses and primaries
will be those who are ideologically driven.
Not saying you are wrong, i think you are right. But because of the goofy primary system, ideological candidates seem to get a boost. Esp in Iowa and SC.

4. At least religiously conservative evangelicals will not vote for Romney.
But if the economy is this bad, Obama is going to be in trouble and all the Republicans might need is a candidate who can walk and chew gum.

5. I don't necessarily agree
They also need somebody with some measure of sanity who *seems* to have a plan (and one probably that doesn't involve the standard GOP talking points) Obama might be having some issues but, if you recall, voters are even less eager to put the Repubs back in charge. Plus, the extremist governors in Ohio and Florida might well nail the coffin shut for the GOP in those critical states. We'll also have to wait and see what happens with the economy as well. The Repubs in Congress are either going to sober up and do the right thing about the debt ceiling (and probably honk off the tea party cult pretty badly) or their actions are going to lead to a situation that makes the economy even worse- for which they will rightfully be blamed. They are fighting a pretty indefensible battle over Medicare, Social Security, subsidies, and tax cuts and the Dems are finally starting to get some good messaging out there.
