Was this an attempt at some sort of back door stimulus?

Was the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve an attempt to stimulate the economy a bit? After all, this release comes three months after it was really needed. Prices are already on the way down, as other OPEC suppliers have started taking up the oil slack from Libya.

One of the factors that was recently cited as holding up the economy was the price of energy, specifically gas. Voila! We now have gas prices really dropping.

Of course the problem with all of this is we're going to be paying for it later, when we refill the strategic reserve. Then we'll see prices climb again.
