3. Not a legend symbol marking a fixed position - they are "floating" user reference points
from your link

"This map is used to demonstrate how a crosshairs can be displayed on a map. These crosshairs will 'float' as the map is panned and zoomed. They will allow the user to determine where the centre of the map is before they place a marker of save the map's position."

try again

6. On paper maps that symbol is used as a register mark for overlays.
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 03:49 PM by Gormy Cuss
The only purpose is alignment. As I wrote on another thread, register marks would not appear in a cluster the way they were used on the SarahPAC map. Register marks tend to be near the edges (or occasionally in the center or along a center line.

eta: I know this from a long ago professional experience where we used maps with overlays to display different data elements, the way one would use software to do the same today. The register marks were the way we made sure the mylar layers were aligned to the base map.
