Question: Were the Social Security checks mailed?
Those who still get their checks by mail will be expecting them in mailboxes on Tuesday. Which means they should be printed and mailed probably today.

It would be interesting to know if this has taken place.

3. I don't know. Mine is direct deposit, and it was deposited
on Wednesday. For some time, new SS recipients have their payments scheduled at different times during the month. Only long-standing recipients receive checks at the first of the month. Today, a large number of recipients use direct deposit. It's reliable, always on time, and very convenient.

8. SS check don't all go out on the same day as they used to do.
Years ago, they were al,l due to be received on the 1st of each month, and the banks complained that the rush of people all at one time was unmanagabme, which it was! now they are mailed according to the first letter of your last name. Ours isn;t due until the 2rd week of August.

17. I'm sure they grou the letters, but I don't know their method.
I do know they always used to be delivered on the 1st of the month, but that was changed a uumber of years ago. We've been collecting SS for three years, and it's always been somewhere between the 18th & the 23rd of the month and we have direct deposit.

10. actually, only a minority of SS recipients are paid by check and
less than half are paid on the 3rd but that's still a lot of checks. Millions of checks are not printed and mailed all at once. Can you imagine a bunch of civil servants stuffing checks in a mailbox? They are actually printed and delivered to the PO many days ahead of time with instructions to be delivered on the 3rd. The PO has had them for a few days already. And, another point. The payments made in August are for benefits due for July. So I'm not sure they would be affected by the debt crisis anyway. Next month?

14. good point about July benefits.
But if there were no money to pay SSA, it wouldn't matter which month the benefits were actually for. It would be money due in August, no matter what it represented.

18. That fear tactic has never been serious. The checks will be there.
Both sides are playing for the 2012 elections. A bill will be passed. All this tv theater is really getting old.
