Target Comes Under Fire Around the World
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/08/13-1

The retail giant Target is under fire from all sides, for union-busting at home and labor violations overseas. The reports that have come out in the past several weeks highlight a continuum of cruelty in the global supply chain.

Though WalMart has long served as labor's arch nemesis, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) has lately zeroed in on Target as a new battlefield—with its hundreds of thousands of employees and recent expansion into the supermarket sector. Although UFCW Local 1500 recently lost a vote to unionize a branch in Valley Stream, New York, their campaign deftly exposed Target's arsenal of intimidation and smear tactics, which ranged from anti-union websites to leaflets warning that a yes vote might ruin the company and force the store to close.

Now plastered across the blogosphere, the propaganda campaign has steeled the outrage at the company's resistance to unions. Organizers have announced they will keep up the fight:

Target's honeymoon is over, the national attention from the election at Valley Stream showed the American public the type of company they really are, one who has little respect for the hard working people who make their company so successful. Target still has the opportunity to change, and they should start by respecting their employees.

1. Target is just as bad as the rest of them, and anyone who thinks they're solving the probem of
Walmart by shopping at Target is sorely mistaken.

4. I'll just get most of my stuff from my grocery store. They have a
union and the employees are happy as Hell with their union. I did shop at Target over Walmart, but this story makes them suck just as bad. Anybody know if the 99cent stores are just as bad or worse?

5. I buy most of my groceries from Trader Joe's
or local farmer's markets. I noticed that the new Target that opened in San Luis Obispo carries groceries, but I didn't find their prices low at all. I doubt if I will shop there very much. I buy most of my clothes at Ross or Marshall's. I haven't been in a Wal-Mart in years.

6. Is it coincidence that Target's decline follows RW nut Gregg Steinhafel taking the CEO position
in 2008? Under Bob Ulrich, Target was known as a gay-friendly, community-friendly business.

7. I think you're onto something....
Target used to be semi-community friendly. Now, they suck. I won't shop there. Haven't since that Gregg dude gave Target $$$ to Repugnants running for office.

Plus, their crap is expensive. Food is terribly expensive. And they won't sell wine/beer on Sunday....give me a break.

11. I've been shopping a lot at Kroger - they have a union and even their little Starbucks
store is staffed by union Kroger employees (yup, I asked!). The store wouldn't let them take tips at first, but the union went to bat and they can have them now. I was able to get all our school supplies there too.
