Matt Damon for President? In US Politics, They Have Seen Crazier Scripts
Damon v. Obama 2.0 would make for quite the campaign. The Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party would be reborn and a world of possibilities that has pretty much disasppeared would pretty much appear again. And, as the article points out, Damon might even win.

Matt Damon for President? In US Politics, They Have Seen Crazier Scripts
The line between Hollywood fame and political power is often blurred, so suggestions that the liberal actor might run can't be dismissed
by Paul Harris

<edit>

So why is Damon's name being mentioned in the context of the 2012 race for the White House and a possible liberal challenge to Barack Obama? The simple answer is to blame leftwing firebrand Michael Moore.

Moore, in a discussion with the liberal politics blog Firedoglake, raised the issue as he talked about his frustration with Obama, who many American leftists see as ignoring them while compromising with the Republican party. Moore called Damon's political stances in recent years courageous and urged him to run, despite there being no hint from the actor himself that he would care to. In a nod to the acting past of two-time Republican President Ronald Reagan, Moore said: "The Republicans have certainly shown the way that when you run someone who is popular, you win. Sometimes even when you run an actor, you win."

<edit>

Damon has won the hearts of many liberals by criticizing Obama over policy issues, and standing up for teachers. Speaking at a recent Save Our Schools march in Washington, DC, he angrily denied a reporter's suggestion that teachers were cosseted. "A teacher wants to teach. I mean, why else would you take a shitty salary, and really long hours, and do that job, unless you really love to do it?" he fumed. A video of the encounter went viral, with Damon being hailed a hero by teachers' groups.

Damon, like Sean Penn with Haiti and George Clooney with Darfur, is one of the few big names who can genuinely say they are activists, not just celebrity brands attached to a good cause. He founded the H2O Africa Foundation, which later became Water.org and which aims to bring clean water to disadvantaged people. He has been involved with Darfur. "Matt Damon seems like a real person on these things. He's running that whole water issue. That actually takes up a lot of his time," said Richard Laermer, a celebrity expert and author of the book 2011: Trendspotting. On a host of issues Damon has eloquently and publicly spoken on subjects dear to liberal hearts. He has slammed the recent debt-ceiling deal struck by Obama and the Republicans and called for rich people like himself to be taxed more. He has spoken against the Iraq war.

17. Dumb is much too kind a word for this
Inane
Ridiculous
Incomprehensibly stupid
An exercise in stupidity so vast that it will render those members of the "left" who support it mute and moot for the next two generations

those seem a bit more apt

8. Exactly, and that's what Moore doesn't seem to understand
This will change only when we get desperate enough to stop playing their game, when we sit at home on national strikes. That's the only thing that will get through to them.

We're not that desperate yet. Most of us still have something left to lose.

4. A great guy
As an ex-Hollywood movie executive I can honestly say that Matt Damon is a great guy. He has been doing good deeds under the radar for many many years. When he stands up for what he believe it is because he believes it and not because he is jockeying for fans, votes, or kudos.

5. I wouldn't mind supporting him in 2016. Why are people so self defeating?
Why would 2012 be suggested as the year Damon should run? Unlike repubs, Dems tend to be 'one try for the White House and you're done.' So suggesting that he make an ass out of himself by running in 2012 is stupid.

6. well, in a perfect world
where we actualy have a shot at electing someone who represents our views, i'd be all for this idea.

Honestly, i like Damon, he's intelligent, honest and can handle the media easily because he's not intimidated by them...

but since there's so much 'fixing' of the game already, do you really think he'd have a shot? there is no way that we can get anyone progressive in office, the rethugs own everyone & everything. the only way we'd ever get a progressive leader...is to take down the fuckers and their corrupt system first...then maybe we could rebuild our govt from the ground up again. They all think they are too big to fail...

10. I'd definitely vote for him.
He'd do a helluva lot better than some of these mealy-mouthed fence-sitting sellout corpo-Dems.

13. If we're going to go Hollywood, why not George Clooney?
He's intelligent, wellspoken, way to the left, involved in progressive causes, old enough to look dignified and gorgeous.

And nobody's going to bring up his sex life.

20. I respect Mr. Damon.
I'm more familiar with his political/social positions than his acting career. I'd love to see him in the political arena full-time.

22. I was thinking of writing in Anthony Weiner... but I'd be down for Matt Damon
I mean... with Weiner we could all hope, at the very least, for some e-foreplay before being screwed (over) by the White House... and that would be a nice change of pace.

Everything I hear about Matt Damon though... makes me dig him more.

I particularly liked this: "... Damon has lent his high profile name to the distinctly unfashionable cause of the Working Families Party. The WFP is an obscure leftwing political party that exists as a sort of pressure group in New York state on Democrats and leftists in order to pursue progressive ideals. Attaching your name to the WFP is about as far from trendy as any Hollywood celebrity could get. ..."

I'm sold. Primary. General. Hell... maybe I'll write him in for every office that doesn't have a leftwing name to check... he can take his pick ;)
