TV meteorologist accused of filing false sexual assault report

She has been suspended pending an internal investigation, the station says
Police say Jones recanted her story during questioning
New York (CNN) -- An on-air meteorologist for New York's WABC-TV has been arrested for falsely reporting an attempted sexual assault to police, a story she later recanted, according to the New York Police Department.

Heidi Jones, who does weather reports on the station's weekend newscasts, called police November 24 claiming that she had been attacked while jogging in Central Park on September 24, according to a police spokesman who would not provide a name, citing police policy.

Jones said she had crossed paths with the attacker, whom she described as a Hispanic male in his 30s, on November 21, when she said he taunted and harassed her.

Police say Jones recanted the story as she was being questioned after she filed the initial report. Her motivation for giving the story is unclear.

Jones was arrested Monday and has been charged with a misdemeanor count of making a false report.

According to a statement read on WABC at noon, Jones has been suspended from the station pending an internal investigation.

1. Well, see, there's the problem. If she'd said it was a black guy they
would have caught the dude without all those pesky questions...

4. I must confess ...
As an African-American male I felt a measure of comfort in this story ... For once the fake story didn't put someone that looked like me at risk.

(Before anyone's head explodes, I know that was a sick attempt at humor ... kind'a.)

5. It should be a felony to make up a violent crime that did not happen, especially rape.
It makes real victims of sexual assault and rape have to go through extra stress and scrutiny. It leaves the impression in people's minds that all rape reports are suspect. That's not good for real victims. It should be a felony to make shit up or to lie to cover up some other crime (i.e. Susan Smith, Elisa Baker).

It should also count as an attempted hate crime to blame a minority race for the fake made up crime too. Even though there are so many more white guys around, these jerks that make shit up usually blame a black guy or a Hispanic guy, knowing that racism will draw attention away from their made up story and get some innocent person hauled in to jail. It's just plain wrong.

At least, that is my $0.02 worth.

6. That is a tough one. You don't want to make actual rape victims less likely to report the attack out
of fear of going go jail.

Her racist embellishment makes an already despicable lie that much worse.
