Cantor Says No Earthquake Disaster Relief For His Home State Unless Spending Is Cut Elsewhere
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/08/25/304204/cantor-earthquake/

This week, Virginia experienced a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, one of the most powerful tremors on the east coast since 1897. As Virginians scramble to assess the damage, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) quickly returned from his trip in Israel to survey the damage done to his congressional district.

“There is an appropriate federal role in incidents like this,” Cantor said. That role? The bare minimum. According to Cantor, Congress’s traditional practice of providing disaster relief without strings attached — a policy its followed for years — is going way beyond the call of duty. If Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) asks for federal aid, Cantor insists that the relief be offset elsewhere in the federal budget:

The next step will be for Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) to decide whether to make an appeal for federal aid, Cantor said. The House Majority Leader would support such an effort but would look to offset the cost elsewhere in the federal budget.

“All of us know that the federal government is busy spending money it doesn’t have,” Cantor said in Culpeper, where the quake damaged some buildings along a busy shopping thoroughfare.

Cantor Spox: If There’s Hurricane Damage, Costs Will Have To Be Paid For With Spending Cuts
Late update: To underscore how real this scenario is, Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency in Virginia.

5. I don't know, but
he carried our district with 65% of the vote. x(

I'm honestly shocked by this, I thought for sure he would suddenly change his stance for his own district.

Unfortunately, I've heard nothing that makes me think he won't sweep the district again.

Will he go back to his constiuency and blame Obama for not giving them the needed aid to rebuild their homes and lives -- because Obama won't cut spending in order to give them relief money?

Then Virginian's should recall his sorry ass. What a piece of filth the man is!

10. In Texas that would be enough to bring out calls for his (metaphorical) head on a platter.
Hell, here they get all twisted if the government isn't handing out disaster relief fast enough. Back during the massive fire outbreak Gov Goodhair (who is also known as Supercuts) was constantly lashing out at the Obama administration for not giving enough to the state.

I wonder how this will fly with Cantor's constituents?

unwillingness to deny services to other states. Then let Cantor explain at election time next year why his district is still damaged.

27. okay, well at least he is consistent
When he said that about Joplin, I wanted to kick his ass.

But now, hey, if they don't get any assistance, they know who to blame, and can do something about it in the next election.

I will make it easy for Republicans though since they want to balance the budget. Democrats will not vote for relief for Cantor's district unless it is offset by a .5% tax increase on the richest 400 Americans. Their total income, those 400, is $136 billion dollars. So taxing them by .5% more would bring in $680 million.

Now, put that up for a vote, and I want to see how many Republicans vote against it.

Because I know they will. I know that to protect the 400 richest Americans from even a .5% tax increase, Republicans would deny other Americans disaster relief.

And that they will lie to the American people about it. They will say they are against "tax increases" when what they would be voting against would be tax increases ON THE 400 RICHEST.

I'd love to see my theory tested on Cantor's head.

37. In other words Cantor wants to take money from some other
necessary programs to pay for his state's disaster relief? Why not LOAN states money for disaster relief with the intention of the states paying back to the US governmnt instead of having to take money from other US programs.
