NYC is beginning to staff evacuation centers
My sister is a NYC teacher. She got an automated call asking if she was willing to "volunteer" at an evacuation center.

1. I'm glad to hear they've actually got some type of plan in place --
reassuring.

Wishing the best for your sister during this scary storm!

5. NYC can potentially be hit by hurricanes
historically it has happened... so it would be surprising if they did not have a plan.

Regardless if this is as bad as they predict... it will be something we cannot fathom yet.

WORST CASE, I hope this time we accept international aid openly from the git go.

8. It seems to be changing quickly (although I haven't seen an
update in several hours). The last one I saw was that the pressure was dropping? Rising? Whichever it was it usually results in stronger winds, but luckily the wind velocity was remaining the same.

I learned in NC that "just" a Cat 2 or Cat 1 can definitely be felt! And inland I saw effects of hurricanes that didn't even hit our Outer Banks - just kept going north, but we still got plenty of wind and rain. Very powerful.

7. Here's an official map of the evacuation zones:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/oem/downloads/pdf/hurricane_map_english.pdf

Just in case someone needs a link to it. It also shows all the evacuation centers.
