10. Have you seen the pics of HWY 12 on Hatteras?
It's gonna be a while before anyone gets to Ocracoke via Hatteras.

Guess they'll have to run emergency ferries from Manteo to Rodanthe.

Seriously, helluva mess. Rough summer for the Outer Banks.

15. Unbelievable
Yes the road is broken in three places?

Guess the Fed, state and local government folks were wrong to evacuate the most vulnerable places...you know the Hype crap we're hearing from the usual suspects.

17. Have they never seen one that suddenly grew stronger or
suddenly changed paths? Don't trust them one little bit because there are too many variables at work. One of my earliest memories is from 1954 when Hurricane Hazel hit. I have never known a time without preparations. My Mama would haunt me if I wasn't ready.

BTW FEMA was so bad after Hugo hit that that people here are still looking for them. Senator Hollings called them "a bunch of bureaucratic jackasses" in a speech on the Senate floor. They are better now, but they will revert to form when a GOPher is elected.

I want to put the "lunch ladies" in charge. When I was in school, lunch was prepared by a group of women in white uniforms and hair nets. They were nice, but they didn't take any crap. They would be prepared, know how to handle surprises, and gawd help anyone who was disruptive.
:hi:

27. It's not unbelievable if you're familiar with the Outer Banks
I was down there right after Hurricane Earl grazed it last year.

HWY 12 was mostly underwater from just north of Rodanthe to the Oregon Inlet.

Parts of the island stayed flooded the entire week I was there.

Mother Nature is constantly rearranging the Outer Banks. Bodie Island used to be an island, not a peninsula. In the not too distant past you could walk from Ocracoke to Hatteras without getting your feet wet.

The problem is that Mother Nature is now fighting with DOT and both sides are stubborn as hell.

There really is no good solution. When the Cape Hatteras National Seashore was established, a reasonable compromise was reached: Most of the land was protected from future development. In return, the residents and property owners were guaranteed access. The dilemma is how much effort and expense the government should spend providing that access and what should be done if the government ever decides to abandon the effort.

How do you put a price-tag on land that's been owned by families for generations?

Also, what is the 'worth' of the incomparable recreational opportunities that are on Hatteras? It's one of the best places on the East Coast for surfing, fishing, kite flying, bird watching and generally just hanging out at the beach.

I honestly have no clue about what should be done.

As for the "Hype", I have mixed feelings. Yes, getting people off that island was necessary. But do you resort to lying to do it? Officials acted like anyone who stayed was facing imminent death. The reality is that people who stayed were facing conditions that would make them wish they were dead: No food, no electricity, harsh, harsh conditions for an extended period of time.

It really is difficult to convince people to leave voluntarily. Most have been saving all year for their week at the beach and don't want to spend it at an inland hotel.

I disagree with exaggerating the danger, just because when a storm that's truly threatening comes along, people will be inclined to ignore the warnings.

23. Ocracoke is largely unscathed
HWY 12 near the north end is damaged but that's kind of a moot point since Hatteras will be closed for a while.

Some of the docks took a hit but I don't think there was any other damage of note.

I'm not sure how they'll handle supply deliveries since the trucks generally come via Hatteras. They can take the ferry from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island but that will be way out of their way.

The Facebook group "Ocracoke meets Irene" has great info, vids and pics.

16. Looks to be tracking too far north for a Gulf entry
For a while this year I was hoping for a TS or a Cat 1 for rain too. Luckily we've gotten it in regular ways, but good luck to Texas.

22. I thought for sure Texas would have gotten some rain by now
Usually there's at least a tropical storm or two that brings rain this time of year. It looks as if Texas isn't going to get its thirst quenched any time soon. I feel for the farmers and ranchers.

25. Some preliminary paths showing it far off the east coast
I'd post a pick but it's on my Hurricane Iphone App. It's kinda following the same path as Irene but staying further out to see.

Thank goodness!
