Italy: Court Upholds Convictions of American CIA agents in Kidnapping Case

An appellate court in Milan upheld on Wednesday the conviction of 23 Americans charged with kidnapping an Egyptian cleric in 2003 and ordered even harsher sentences. All but one of the Americans are Central Intelligence Agency operatives. Defense lawyers said they planned to file appeals, which would go to Italy’s highest court. Robert Seldon Lady, a former C.I.A. base chief in Milan, was sentenced to nine years, one more than his previous conviction, while the 22 other Americans received seven-year sentences, up from five years.

1. Well...
Someone is paying attention to the idea that the rule of law applies to EVERYONE. America needs to rein in its bloated intelligence apparatus.

John.

6. But none of them are actually there, right?
They just can't ever go to the EU again.

11. Not that I can see, and they're probably in countries w/o extradition to EU
Interpol doesn't have arrest powers.

13. What makes you think they're not stateside?
We routinely ignore requests for extradition from other countries.

14. The fact that Lady is known to have gone into hiding in Honduras, for one
Though I have no idea about the other 23; they could be here, but the US's treaty obligations might make that uncomfortable, which is why I assumed they're flopping around in Latin America.

12. Well, Honduras in this case
The Milan section chief went into hiding in Honduras after he fled from Italian police.

10. Red Notice! Red Notice!
US doesn't get their mitts on Assange if Italy doesn't get to have those CIA agents.
