Humane Society president says Vick would be good pet owner
Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sit. Rollover. Good doggy.

Those are words that Michael Vick apparently doesn't gets to say since a judge temporarily banned him from owning a dog as part of his criminal sentence.

Now, the man who gained infamy for dogfighting is saying publicly that he misses owning them.

"I would love to get another dog in the future," he told a Website called theGrio in an article published Wednesday. "I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process. I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love, and my passion for animals."

1. Tell that to the humanitarian foundation that had to deal with the
carnage and which Vick has never even acknowledged nor offered to help. AHS is manipulating the situation to their benefit. I can't blame them for that. But, they lose credibility with this BS fawning over such a detestable man.

13. As an FYI:
Vick's creditors are scheduled to receive 12 million dollars by 2015. Although his salary this year is roughly 4.15 million - Vick is living on an allowance set by the bankruptcy court - from Yahoo Sports:

A 112-page, court-approved document serves as Vick's "reorganization plan." It was uncovered by ESPN legal analyst Lester Munson.

Among the facts Munson discovered in the plan:

• Two-thirds of every dollar Vick earns goes to creditors and taxes.

• The rest of the money is strictly controlled. Think of it as an allowance.

• Vick can spend $4,250 per month on rent and utilities and $472 per month on a car. His mother, who was on Vick's payroll during his headier, pre-prison days, can receive $2,500 per month.

• Other obligations Vick owes include mortgages, child support, fees for his agent (who gets $800,000 through 2015) and for his tax lawyers (who will eventually receive a total of $2.6 million). The allowance does allow for Vick to pay $1,355 per month for private school for the two children he has with his fiancee, Kijafa Frink. (Munson calls it a "rare bit of extravagance.")

• His creditors stand to receive $12 million through 2015, provided Vick continues to receive a multi-million dollar salary.

I'm not going to cry for Vick - but he also isn't living it up on a 4 million dollar contract

so that he can pull down some bucks off the field and after his playing days. He probably should have had someone proofread that statement for him - people that really care about being rehabilitated don't segue into public image concerns in the very next sentence...

48. Naw...just greedy.
Vick appeared in U.S. bankruptcy court in Newport News, Va., on Thursday for a hearing on the fees his lawyers are seeking in the case. Vick's lead bankruptcy lawyers from Crowell & Moring had asked the court to approve more than $2.6 million in fees and expenses for 7,200 billable hours of work over ten months.
"I don't understand how that happens," U.S. bankruptcy judge Frank Santoro said at the hearing, according to The Associated Press. (The billable time would equate to working 24 hours a day on the Vick case for 300 straight days.)

Edited on Wed Dec-15-10 04:43 PM by jtuck004
they are going to be on that side.

They do some very, very good things for animals. They are also an incredible donation-sucking machine, and it is not clear that
this strategy is the most effective for the animals they say they represent. Many of their ads use a local shelter-like theme, yet they operate NO shelters. They are involved in lots of legislative efforts, some international.

The HSUS has $160,000,000 in assets, spends about 24 cents of every dollar on fundraising

More here...

Depends on where you sit in the animal welfare world as to whether they are good or bad. But if you want to help your local shelter, donate or volunteer at your local shelter.

66. Really?
Hm. HSUS' anti-sealing campaign and ongoing collection of horrible video and images was one of the biggest parts of the 2009 ban on seal products in the EU. Did you know that because of that ban, the 2010 seal hunt had almost zero demand for pelts? One buyer. One. That demand and low ice meant roughly 50 sealing ships left to hunt seals. Down quite a bit from the usual 400-500.

But yeah, nothing has changed for them.

71. There are many anti-seal hunt groups

Greenpeace probably the most affective. The killing of "white seals" was banned long ago. Some groups kept using the image to
drum up donations though. HSUS is/was one of them- just as they used the idea that they were still rescuing pets in New Orleans
more than a year after the event, even though they WEREN'T- just to pray on animal lovers for donations.

Some facts in this article that I just googled about seal hunting quotas, etc.

I could Google "biggest idiots working on the seal hunt", and that's what I'd get.

So again, the EU banned importing seal products. Did so largely on the footage HSUS provided and what Sea Shepherd did.

You want to try again?

HSUS, UAN and PETA were on the ground liberating and saving animals post Katrina. If you have something to disprove that, please post it here.

Who kept $20+ million that were donated to the Katrina animal rescue cause. He pulled out early and didn't leave a dime to
the groups who stayed on to continue rescue operations.

Wayne Pacelle cares about money over animals. He piggybacks on others successes and claims them as his own. Look up their
campaigns. Today I was asked to sign a petition to get a farm in Virginia to honor its promise to stop using gestation crates
in 2017. 2017!!??!!

79. You're rude and uninformed

Are all of your conversations like this? You attack someone who was on the ground, behind the scenes and continued to work with the remaining groups.
HSUS vowed to pass along some money that was donated specifically to the NOLA pet rescues. People DID donate for this specific disaster, not to HSUS in
general. BTW, HSUS, unlike the ASPCA- a large rescue group- doesn't follow the rescue, shelter, rehabilitate and adopt out. They take the money and run.

I know. I was there. YOU weren't. PETA wasn't either. They sent out emails. Big deal. I didn't see the. I saw Best Friends, Mutt Shack, ASPCA, Noah's Wish,
Farm Sanctuary and others. PETA? No. You're the clueless one. Too funny that you are such an attack freak when you are so ignorant of the situation.

Tell me how much HSUS made in donations for this purpose. And then tell me how much they spent. Then tell me whether you think they pulled up stakes
too early. You seem to be ignoring these questions. If you don't have the answers, or if you don't want to answer them at all- fine. Just don't sling your
insults at me because you're unhappy with the facts. Fox news does that shit. We're better than that.

I was one of the rescuers downtown. We got down and dirty to save animals. We were stunned when HSUS bailed. Then stunned that they took the money
and ran.

I imagine most people believe they have knowledge of what is or is not inconsequential. I would also imagine most people are wrong in that particular form of self-validating hubris.

But if you're speaking of the Grand Scheme, I'd hazard it's all a bit inconsequential. In a million years, canyons and mountain ranges will laugh at our politics, our message boards and all our cares, worries and concerns.

Except for yours, of course...

37. Not saying in know the OP's intentions...
but this thread has turned into yet another one calling for physical violence against another person.

Yes, he did unspeakable things to innocent animals. He did his time in jail and is still paying the monetary debt that our justice system determined to be fair punishment for the crimes.

I'm sick of reading this filth.

He is scum. Those that fawn over him because they want to be entertained, speak to the worst of our societal woes-- the ready ability to ignore heinous acts if the person is beautiful, rich, famous, or has athletic talents. That is my opinion. I speak for those who can not.

77. This thread is full of reactionary statements
I do not fawn over him nor would I ignore heinous acts because he's a great football player. I do not condone acts of violence toward any person or animal, especially if others believe that he deserves the horrific and violent death of being mauled by *insert poisonous/sharp-clawed animal here*.

The whole eye-for-an-eye thing is so old testament... :eyes:

45. Wayne Pacelle does not work for the Humane Society. He is a paid operative for MV.
Wayne Pacelle has been a shill for MV since day one, and should really resign at this point.

52. Michael Vick is about as "rehabilitated" as Jayson Williams.
They become such outstanding citizens once they go to prison. :sarcasm:

Vick tortured and killed many dogs while Williams killed his limo driver and his dog and threatened to kill at least one other human. They talk a good game once they are convicted, but I can't help but feel that it's motivated by financial considerations only.

Excerpt from CBS News & AP:

Former New Jersey Nets player Dwayne Schintzius told investigators that he and Williams bet $100 that Schintzius could not drag Williams' Rottweiler out of his house. Schintzius said he won the bet and told Williams to pay up. An angry Williams went inside, returned with a shotgun and killed the dog, Schintzius said.

The former teammate told investigators that Williams pointed the gun at him and told him to clean up the dog's remains "or you're next."

Williams, 36, still faces a retrial on charges of reckless manslaughter in the limo driver's death because a jury deadlocked on that charge in April.

59. Michael Vick's story is one of redemption.
If you don't believe me, check out who's leading in the voting that determines who goes to the pro bowl.

to HSUS and give it Best Friends. Too bad, I think they do good work but I just can't stand with them on this issue.

As for Vick - this "to show people that I" says it all. It's not about making amends. It's about convincing people of his changed image. Fuckwad will never be forgiven by me.

67. Okay, he can have a pet, just not a dog.
How about a cuddly little black mamba?

If he plays with it nicely and doesn't get bitten, it'll prove he's sincere.

The people who handle snakes for Jesus can give him tips.

81. For all the talk about how Vick's sentence was overly harsh...
in terms of prison and fines and such...

He was convicted of heinous acts of animal abuse and animal killing!

What's so harsh about telling him he's not allowed to own pets?
