the phone company called and asked me if I wanted to sign up. I said no. She asked "didn't I want to know who was calling to see if I wanted to talk to them or not?"

My elderly dad really appreciated being able to see who was calling while sitting in his recliner. If he didn't know who was calling, or didn't want to take the call, he didn't bother expending what little energy he had left by getting out of his chair to answer the phone.

16. AFAIK, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV and Dish Network have this capability.

Though TWC only does this if you have their phone service, for the satellite providers you have to plug your phone line into the satellite box.

It can be disabled.

Plus if you are receiving calls you don't want your family to know about they that other party is calling the wrong number (should have given the other party a different private number) or you shouldn't be hiding secrets from your family (some secrets, like a surprise vacation are good secrets).
