I was wrong about the Wall St Protests
by Rey Mota

Upon first learning about the Wall Street protests, I dismissed them rather smugly.

Not the message, but the actual protesters. I unfairly stereotyped them as a group of 'trust fund anarchists' and over privileged Columbia art students who had no coherent message or leader or any chance of succeeding at their goals...

SNIP

...After seeing the heavy handed tactics of the NYPD, after seeing the pilots and the postal workers who showed up,and the slow but steady groundswell of support coming from all over the country and the world, I had a sudden realization that I was dead wrong about the whole movement.

There are people who are more committed to social change than I ever could imagine. There are people far braver than I could ever be. There are people risking more than I ever could or would.

Sometimes I think I am the problem, as I was the guy who was sitting comfortably in the back, sneering at the ones up front taking the hits. I guess that's what they call armchair quarterbacking...and it was really fucking stupid of me to hold that view...

1. I didn't sneer at them. I am terribly afraid for them
now that unions are starting to support them. This is when the heavy handed crackdown usually comes.

9. yep
and there are going to be flocks of agent provocateurs trying to make it look like the protesters have turned violent so that they can start the real heavy handed crack downs. The positive thing, however, is that this has spread much larger than New York, and there are enough cameras that people know it was the NYPD that got violent.

5. It will be a Long 'struggle' though...
Much too long for too many.

I hope it will grow large 'enough' ASAP anyway.

Way to go, Rey. Your example will encourage others to jump the fence as well.
