Radical cleric killed by drone was twice arrested with prostitutes in San Diego

--Tony Perry in San Diego

Anwar Awlaki, the American-born cleric and jihadist killed by a U.S.-backed drone strike in Yemen, spent several years in San Diego but was gone before the Sept. 11 attacks.

He once told a reporter that his years in San Diego were "uneventful": a stint as a graduate student at San Diego State, some preaching at a small mosque in La Mesa, and a friendship with two students from Saudi Arabia who were later among the 9/11 hijackers.

What he didn't mention were two arrests and misdemeanor convictions for soliciting prostitutes along the infamous street-walker strip of El Cajon Boulevard.

In August 1996, Awlaki paid a $400 fine and was ordered to attend an AIDS awareness seminar. In April 1997, he paid a $240 fine and was sentenced to community service.

4. He continued his evilness apparently...
...the FBI was going to pick him up for violation of the Mann Act before he fled the country to Britain in 2002.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anwar_Al-Alwaki#In_the_United_States.3B_1991.E2.80.932002

It's curious though that they didn't have the British pick him up before he fled to Yemen.

Bush administration fail!

5. i bet the percentage of guys who seek out prostitutes is higher among
the guys who claim to be such good god, religious moral types than among the rest who aren't so openly fanatic about their beliefs while condemning others.

8. WHAT A FLAMING HYPOCRITE!
What a flaming hypocrite! And this guy set himself up as some sort of religious teacher and hoy-warrior. And Islam is a religion that frowns on extra-marital sex even more than Christianity does!

What's more, al Qaeda's blood-brothers in the Taliban killed women for simply running away from forced marriages and abusive husbands, let alone practicing prostitution!

It's clear as crystal to me that right-wing Republicans aren't the only people waging a war on women.

This dirt-bag's behavior resembles that of his fellow-hypocrites among America's Religious Right. He wallows in the behavior he professes to denounce.

Somewhere in the hereafter, al-Awlaki is being lectured about "walk the walk as well as talk the talk."

18. No they're not. Most people don't realize how pervasive it is too...
...the Taliban have become a big joke (thanks South Park)- but for Afghan women and little girls they are deadly serious. That is why we are still in Afghanistan - we leave women and little girls will be tortured and murdered by the 10,000's of thousands or they will have to flee. They are murderers and offenders to people of decency around the globe. We need to really step up our propaganda game in Afghanistan about how other Islamic nations treat their women with dignity and respect. For example, the revolution in Libya has brought women to the forefront of society as deserving protection and rights. America can still yet be a force for good in the world!

:applause:

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — No students showed up at Mirwais Mena girls' school in the Taliban's spiritual birthplace the morning after it happened.

A day earlier, men on motorcycles attacked 15 girls and teachers with acid.

The men squirted the acid from water bottles onto three groups of students and teachers walking to school Wednesday, principal Mehmood Qaderi said. Some of the girls have burns only on their school uniforms but others will have scars on their faces.

One teenager still cannot open her eyes after being hit in the face with acid.

39. I'm Not Talking About the Taliban In Afghanistan, But al Awlaki's Behavior In The US
I suspect that I wasn't clear enough in whose hypocricy I was condemning how. I was condemning al Awlaki's streetwalker-soliciting behavior here in the US before/during he was condemning western "decadence" and western "immorality".

I think we BOTH agree that al Qaeda and the Taliban are part and parcel of the Islamicist fanatic front of the war on women.

Or do you just not understand what you read?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For instance, knowing you by what you write on DU might impact whether or not I consider you beautiful. For instance, narcissism and low intellect aren't high on my list of showing beauty.

21. Maybe we should enforce the rule of law in other countries
Why not. The argument is Yemen convicted in absentia, therefore it is quite fine and dandy to kill a US citizen without due process on whomever is in power's word of guilt on foreign soil.

When he presents an "immanent and continuing threat to the United States of America" yes it is - you should just count our blessings that his attempts have failed more often than not.

Why is his life worth more than theirs? They're somebodies mother - somebodies grandmother: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygI3UZ65iyQ

23. LOL
If a R existed in the equation, this place would be out for blood. I am not a rah rah guy; I am a fundamental principle person. I don't change my values on what is right or wrong for the team. Casey Anthony was guilty too. Off with their heads I guess, depending on who is in charge.

LMAO. I have to laugh. The mind bending mental gymnastics is exhausting to a level of humor.

24. So basically you're a fundamentalist?
Why does everything have to be political? Can't some things just be good for world peace? George Bush didn't change his values either on "what is right or wrong for the team." Casey Anthony didn't run off to Yemen and wage war against the people of the United States.

If watching news footage bends your mind - I wonder what watching a movie on human rights would do. Yes, human rights, not legal rights.

"A radical is a man with both feet firmly planted — in the air. A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned to walk forward. A reactionary is a somnambulist walking backwards. A liberal is a man who uses his legs and his hands at the behest — at the command — of his head."

27. And what did Paul Wellstone say???
"If we don't fight hard enough for the things we stand for,
at some point we have to recognize that we don't really stand for them."
--- Paul Wellstone

Need the video?

Why is it political? IT'S NOT. That is the point. Convicted without a trial. If you think conviction via absentia in YEMEN is okay for you, well we will have nothing in common.

fundamental principle on the rule of law is not your fundamental take because you and I have nothing in common likely - I use the real definition of the word and not the religious connotations you infer. I will not cheer a desecration of the rights in America and human rights for that matter.

If you can show me proof of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt beyond words, feel free. And it can't be the words of hearsay like in the Anthony case. Who determines that anyway? Will a Republican president determine that Progressive values are terrorism. No Woman or Man is above the laws of this country in my opinion. If you can show me in the Bill of rights and the constitution where a US citizen of words not indicted and not tried in an AMERICAN court is designated for death on foreign soil, please feel free.
