The Marines are coming to Wall St

This was taken from a message I just received on facebook:

"The Marines are coming to Wall St...(to PROTECT the protestors) "I'm heading up there tonight in my dress blues. So far, 15 of my fellow marine buddies are meeting me there, also in Uniform. I want to send the following message to Wall St and Congress: I didn't fight for Wall St. I fought for America. Now it's Congress' turn. My true hope, though, is that we Veterans can act as first line of defense between the police and the protester. If they want to get to some protesters so they can mace them, they will have to get through the Fucking Marine Corps first. Let's see a cop mace a bunch of decorated war vets. I apologize now for typos and errors. Typing this on iPhone whilst heading to NYC. We can organize once we're there. That's what we do best. If you see someone in uniform, gather together. A formation will be held tonight at 10PM. We all took an oath to uphold, protect and defend the constitution of this country. That's what we will be doing. Hope to see you there!!"

98. Hard for the protesters to back them
When they're receiving Captain's Mast back at the base, getting demoted, restricted to base and having pay withheld.

Going to a protest in uniform is against the rules.

I'll be in NY in two days in uniform. Arrest me and let's go from there.

It is, but it has been done many times. I did it in 1968 and 1969
during anti-war protests at the Pentagon and elsewhere. I was detained a couple of times, but released. It has considerable impact, though. The USAF gave me an honorable discharge a few months early because of it. They didn't want to deal with it at the time.

I'm not sure that is enforceable by NYPD, but SP could show up.

126. No the policy is NOT clear
Specifically, 10 USC, Subtitle A, Part II, Chapter 45, Section 772.

(c) A retired officer of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps may bear the title and wear the uniform of his retired grade.

(f) While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force.

So retired officers could wear their uniform and any former member could always say it was a theatrical performance (the courts have defined this section very liberally) and claim protecting Americans does not tend to discredit the armed forces.

Of course each branch of service has their own regulations about wearing the uniform.

I'd forgotten about (c) above. I wonder if I can still fit into my uniform?

They will be taken to mast, it's the each service having it's own regs thing.

130. If you read the message all the way through
it was actually Marine VETERANS.

I don't think they can actually do anything to you for showing up in uniform if you're no longer on active duty. If there was some attempt to inflict payback via delaying benefit checks or things like that, it would probably swell the ranks of vets in the protests.

11. Not to worry- that video is old.
It was one of the first victories of the movement-
the private owner of the park said they could stay.

It's the Bloomberg-Goonberg squad that worries me.
And I hope other military families and vets show up there
to join the protest. They are getting screwed royally by
the PTB.

Let the world see cops attacking Marines for wanting justice for us all.
For most here I realize that's a hard discipline to master.

48. The world forgets that these marines are more than likely the same
age as the protesters or a little older. If and when they leave the military they will be facing the same horrible economic conditions as them. I am proud that they are standing up. I see that advertisement about Ken Burn's WWII video and it says they knew what they were fighting for. These soldiers today also know what they are not fighting for.

49. I hope you are out of the Marines. Just a heads up in case you are not. Attending a political
function (protests, campaign rallies, or anything that could be considered partisan) IN UNIFORM is punishable under the UCMJ. If you are fully discharged, then you are pretty much free to do anything you wish in your uniform.

55. How come they get to ignore the law and we have to obey the most petty bureaucratic regulations?
It's not like the law is some respectable, neutral force at this point. They wrote most of it.

And technically Occupy Wall Street isn't partisan. Republicans are perfectly free to campaign for a law-abiding Wall Street. It's no more partisan than a litter cleanup.

60. It's not federal law, it's military law, and partisan activity is decided by a service person's
commander, not the US government. Violation of UCMJ can result in jail, fine, extra duty or dishonorable discharge. Republicans are free to attend an Obama rally, but they can't due it in military uniform if they are currently enlisted or commissioned in the military.

71. There are other bad discharges besides dishonorable ones
A guy really has to work at it to qualify for a dishonorable discharge, because he has to commit an offense punishable by general court-martial.

Even the Bad Conduct Discharge is hard to get, because that comes as part of a "BCD Special" court-martial.

If these guys were in the Army, Chapter 14 (separation for misconduct) and a discharge "under other than honorable conditions" would be my first thought. Well...that is...unless the battalion commander's house was robosigned out from under him while the colonel was in Iraq, and then a Meritorious Service Medal and a "don't do this again while you're in uniform, okay?" would be called for.

76. I was giving worse case scenarios. Either way, I generally agree with the rule. The reality, a
service member would more than likely get forfeiture of 1/2 pay for one month, 30 days extra duty and restriction to barracks. But there are some asshole commanders out there.

143. It's not all that hard to get a BCD
My ex-husband was discharged from the Navy -- after 17 years of service -- for mouthing off to a civilian police officer (who was being over-the-top in his treatment of a friend of the ex's who'd had more than a bit too much to drink one night and got into a brawl at a local pub -- my ex was in the process of trying to get the drunk guy out of there and back to the base when the police showed up, dragged the guy -- who wasn't resisting -- away from my ex and slammed him, face first, to the ground). After launching a few choice words at the CPO - peppered liberally, I'm sure, with F-bombs - he was put in the back of a police car and driven back to the base, where he was turned over to the shore patrol. He wasn't charged with anything, wasn't arrested (or even ticketed), but the Navy still kicked him out with a BCD for conduct unbecoming.

56. Semper Fi!!!
As someone who got a call from his squadron commander ordering me to stop talking about the war (back in the early 1970's), I am proud and excited that Americans are standing up to their so-called financial overlords.

When I saw that picture of the Wall Street elite standing on balconies sipping champagne all I could think of was, "let them eat cake." (And we all know how that turned out.)

I'm an old vet, out of work for the past 2 years but still not ready to retire, watching our country being stolen by the uber-wealthy and for the first time in a very long time, I'm starting to feel some hope.

NYPD officers who do want to act like goons will need more than pepper spray to deal with a bunch of jarheads. We must see video of this.

Seriously, though, they might want to rethink the uniforms, impressive as they are visually. As I recall, wearing them to an event like this might be punishable under the UCMJ. Perhaps some other item of clothing to identify themselves?

Anyway, they make me proud to be a former Marine. :patriot:

If the concern arises why they were at a public protest (other then that whole pesky defending the Constitution of the United States of America thing) in uniform.

Just tell the superiors that they were holding a place for the NYPD officers that had to work on the other side of the line. I know a few that strongly support the peaceful demonstrators.

America stands on the crossroads today, not soon, but TODAY.

"Reilly added an edited statement: "I'm no longer in active duty or in any way contractually indebted to the military. Nor are any of my friends that are joining me.

To the officers' of this thread: I'm aware of the potential, maybe inevitable trouble I can get in. So too are my friends.

I don't really care about the debate here, the upvotes, the downvotes or anything in here really. Mental masturbation is awesome and all. But fucking hell people get off reddit and do something about it. The decision is made. I just figured reddit to be a useful tool to get the attention of a good amount of veterans."

Since they are no longer active, they shouldn't get into trouble with the military for protesting.

136. They can get into trouble if they are no longer active.
They can get into trouble for wearing the uniform while participating in a protest - whether active, reserves, or retired. And if the uniform is worn by someone who has never served in the military, they commit a federal crime of impersonating a service member. Anyone who has served in the military should know these things.

I'm not saying they would be punished and I'm not saying they wouldn't be, as relevant laws are not consistently enforced. What I am saying is, if they wear their military uniform to a political protest they take their chances.

A couple of days ago I saw some advice posted here about what you could be arrested for. For example, you can occupy half of a sidewalk but not more than that. I thought that was good to help people know what they can and can't get away with. In that spirit I didn't think anyone would mind if I weighed in to correct some misinformation in this thread, hoping that I might help soldiers and vets be better informed.

By wearing the uniform to a protest they are risking disciplinary measures, in addition to taking all the same chances everyone else is taking.

Coincidence, maybe. But, Karl Jung called it Synchronicity when Collective Unconsciousness carries a bunch of us along on the same current. This current is strong.

152. if the press gets video of veterans Civil rights be'n violated by Draconian Fascist tactics it will
get on the news Finlay.

then the reason people are there will hopefully be exolained..

and the bottom 80% Americans who have been LOOTED by Wall Street down to holding only 7% of Americas Financial wealth might get pissed off enough to vote against the GOP Fascist Machine.

the Best example of Fascism is the richest nation on Earth making 80% of it's Citizens slaves to make the richest 20% with 93% of financial wealth RICHER, because wealth and power is proof of god's favor of a man.. so it is a sin to tax them and the poor are being punished by god so it is a sin to help them

this means the Rich have DEIFIED themselves! JUST LIKE THE ROMAN CESARS DECLARING THEMSELVES GODS.

richest 1% holds 42% of Americas Financial Wealth 6 times what the bottom 80% hold, top 5% holds 72% which is 10 times what the lower 80% hold, bottom 80% holds only 7% now that is what i call Wealth Redistribution, there is a recession because there isn't enough money in circulation because wall street has looted it thru speculation that is a non value added activity, it raised the cost of living for the under classes, inhibits education and scientific research so a bunch of psychotic OCD narcissistic wealth and power hoarders can get richer... those people are mentally ill and out of control.

Edited on Sun Oct-02-11 08:24 PM by tcaudilllg
I can see the emotional play-by-play. It would split the families of those who participated in the crackdown. It would divide the nation, but the protestors would carry a winning majority. The only way to beat the ENTJs is to make them feel powerless, by ceasing our work, and preventing them from doing work as well.

I would love to see this expand further. I want entire divisions of servicemen to stand up with their fellow citizens and give voice to the fact that their personal sacrifices and especially the ultimate sacrifice of their comrades-in-arms were NOT to protect the bank accounts of the 1%. THEY ARE THE 99%!

They were supposed to show at 22:00 ET. That's 20 hours ago and I am surprised to not see any pics posted.

Can someone in NY verify that this did or did not, in fact, happen.

Pardon my skepticism, but that is what makes me a liberal.
