Edited on Mon Oct-03-11 07:55 AM by Ichingcarpenter

You go girl!!

On edit .... you know it sort of brought a tear in my eye and hope for the next generation
BTW... I had OWC vs OWS which why I edited.

on 2nd edit I thought she was 13 but she's 18 .... Anyway I like her spirit.

5. The US Supreme Court is deciding a case this term...
re: the lawful search of those detained for even minor charges, including misdemeanors and whether that can include strip searching/body cavity searches (as has become the case in some jurisdictions).

I see this young very hopeful and idealistic girl and just pray they do the right thing... I know, I know... Expecting Scalia, Roberts, Thomas, Alito to rule against giving police free license to do as they please, is probably a stretch, but I just have to hope.

I applaud this young girl's activism. Activism and peaceful protest should not carry risk of bodily harm at the hands of the police.

Edited on Mon Oct-03-11 07:44 AM by Pacifist Patriot
Have you seen 8th and 9th graders these days? People swear my fourteen year old son has to be 17 or 18.

Honestly, I know twenty year olds who look twelve and twelve year olds who look 16. Who can tell anymore? I believe this is an eighteen year old. Doesn't she have her own blog? But honestly, she looks 13 to me. I could totally buy it if I hadn't seen more information on her elsewhere.

that doesn't get carded. It is something to see when the 18 year old strolls into a club and then her two big sisters 24 and 26 get carded right behind her. I think size has a lot to do with it as the youngest is very tall and the older 2 are both a shade under 5 feet tall.

18. Right after he turned twelve, my now fourteen-year old...
grew eight inches in six months. He swears he never had growing pains. I can't believe it. On the other hand, he was a little butterball for two years before his growth spurt so that might have insulated him I suppose. I'd get lectures from my mother on childhood diabetes. She absolutely would not believe he was eating a healthy diet and getting exercise. Now we know why his body bloated I guess. At 6'2" and 170 pounds she's now off my case and he towers over the rest of the freshmen class.

50. That happened to my son,
but a late bloomer, he was closer to 15. He was never small but on the small side of average, until he suddenly grew at least 8 inches, and then continued to grow. He's at 6'4" now. I'm not sure if he is finished yet. But he's filling out so I think he might be done. Boy did he have growing pains - throughout his life, even before his growth spurt. Funniest thing - he grew so fast he started misjudging distances to his new size. I can't tell you how many time he ran through a doorway only to slam his shoulder into the door frame. He even hit his head on a lower ceiling in the house once.

Her expression says it all, this is a young lady who isn't buying the bullshit that corporate America is selling. But she's not being an asshole about it, quite the contrary.

The policewoman on the other hand, seems a bit ill at ease with the situation.

Where were girls like this when I was 13? Or 18? Or ever?

As far as the tear in the eye and hope - I'm with ya.

for those who think that what THEY believe must be the Truth.

So it turns out that she's not 13 at all. She's 18.

PS...the title was also edited to change the girl's age from 13 to 18, as I could have SWORN that's what it said before I posted. Also, why would others point out that she was 18, not 13, unless the title said something about her very young age...

It's a substantial reason they're so desirable to the military. We should be THANKING the youth for putting that same fight up for us.

Look at her face. She is UNCONQUERABLE! And if they're just as interested in getting the notoriety for their AWESOMENESS, that's just another part of being an 18-year-old.

I'd be proud to have her as a daughter. I'd also tell her that some values are worth getting arrested for; I'm proud of your priorities...can I borrow your hat sometimes?

"Hey guys. Yeah, that's me getting arrested.

I would just like to take the time by saying that I was there to only take pictures for a portfolio. In all honesty, I had no solid idea of what the protest was about. When I knew I was about to get arrested, I had phoned my mother and she told me 'if its the safest way off the bridge and you won't be getting stepped/crushed go for it'. When the cop said it was my turn, I was all for it.

Oh and by the way, thanks for the compliments but I'm 18."

35. What's offensive and demeaning about it?
I've seen a few people right here on DU say that one of the goals of protesting is to BE arrested.

Like it's some sort of badge of honor. Like unless you've been handcuffed and carted off to the pokey, you haven't done your job. You haven't really LIVED.

That girl is 18. A child.

What makes anyone here think she wouldn't feel that way too? And, being proud of her accomplishment, she wouldn't want to post it on her Facebook page, if she has one?

In the larger scheme of things, that sort of photo is a hell of a lot better than a photo of her drunk out of her mind, holding up a bottle of gin and acting like an idiot, like many photos I see of people older than she is.

:eyes:

I saw Post #21 as implying that Katie's Primary Intention was a neat-o kewl pic full of awesomeness for Facebook, to get "likes" --

I have complete respect for anybody (whether 13, 18, or 118) who stands up for their deeply held principles sufficiently to get cuffed and carted off. My assumption is that she was there primarily to take part the protest, not for Facebook accolades.

Divergence in perception, here -- would like to hear Katie tell us why she's there!

96. Remember the Simpsons episode when Bart dropped a walkie-talkie down the well
and fooled everyone into thinking some nice kid was down there...then fell in himself, explained everything, and people walked away saying, "I liked the other boy better."

It's true, 13 would have been an outrage...

If a Rightwing talker had dismissed her as a "girl," the response here would be outrage.

Dangerously cute. You can watch her get arrested on the video. She was near the front I think. This photo and the one of the two women on the ground after getting tear gassed will stay with us.

77. Hell, I marched in the first Earth Day protest here in Cleveland
when I was in sixth grade...

Protesting is for the young and idealistic.

Me, I'm an old foggy who appreciates the good these kids are doing if only to call attention to the malevolent nature of the supposedly impregnable financial fortress known as Wall Street...

We really need to stop worshiping mammon in any shape or form. It is destructive.

Appreciate what a working economy can accomplish with the input of all the people.

79. good job officer!
Keep us safe from those dangerous, DANGEROUS Hot Topic kids, never know when all that standing around snapping pictures might erupt into a massacre. Good thing there's NOTHING going on in NY, that a few dozens cops couldn't be doing with their time elsewhere. I'm sure REAL CRIMES didn't happen while the shoe-shine boys and girls of the ruling elite were shepherding activists into vans.

80. Good job copper you nabbed a serious terrorist here ...
.... you have no idea how stupid and unimpressive you look! I am trying to be understanding about the cops because their jobs and security are surly on the line. But I see a picture like this and I just want to scream “what is you major malfunction numnuts”!

The spunky young lady looks the same age as my twin granddaughters! Damn you stupid coppers!
