I attended an awesome event in Boston (Summerville) this weekend called HONK Fest www.honkfest.org, billed as a gathering of "Activist Street Bands." There were 27 bands playing in various parts of the Davis Square area. They were from all over the country, mostly brass-based. A friend of mine was in one of the bands, and they played and sang a song with lyrics about "occupying Boston..." This was the sixth annual festival, been planned for at least a year, but MSNBC showed footage of it this morning claiming that the massive gathering was part of the OWS gatherings going on on Wall Street and around the country. What's wrong with that? Well, this was a MUSIC festival with a political bent, but it had nothing to do with OWS...and MSNBC show footage of half-naked hippies dancing a playing bongo drums, people in crazy costumes (that's part of the annual tradition). That seemed to me to be an effort to marginalize the whole OWS movement, to make it look like it's just more crazy lefties on dope dancing in the street. There might have been crazies lefties on dope dancing in the streets, but that is because it was a music festival with 27 bands playing on 27 stages simultaneously, it had nothing to do with the "Occupy" movement, despite the lyrics my friend's band added to a standard old song.
OTOH, it was publicity, it was in the national media. Just not sure THIS was what should have been in the national media to illustrate the protests going on in cities all over the country.
