Occupy Houston Oct. 6
I'm not a part of this group, but will try to check it out at some point on Thurs. They look pretty organized, with a definite plan for the day. Here is their website: http://occupyhouston.org/

(Also posted in the Texas forum, the site has been updated since then)

2. Bumping this up -
do a search for these folks on Facebook or Twitter (#OccupyHouston). They are working hard to get it organized and would like folks to show up and photograph/video their efforts.

5. Don't expect a warm reception
My hat is off. That's an awfully red city in an awfully red state.

I'm so glad it's happening there, though. Even Texans are tired of the status quo.

6. Houston isn't red
at least not by red state standards; it's redder than say Philly, but Obama won Harris County, and we have a pretty progressive mayor and some Dems in Congress. The suburbs are a different story for sure tho.

8. Even some of the suburbs are getting more diverse -
this city is 2.9 million folks, 37% of that total is hispanic/latino. Strong labor in the refineries - there are worse places for sure.

9. great turnout in Dallas today
with only a few hecklers as we marched by. There were a lot of folks who yelled, honked, etc in favor of the march. Even the cops were cool.

in a committed relationship (and was before she was elected). And Houston voted blue in 2008. I think you got your Texas cities messed up. :)

By ROBERT STANTON

Houston Chronicle

More than 200 protesters — young and old, healthy and disabled — converged in downtown Houston Thursday under the banner of the Occupy Houston movement.

The demonstration was an outgrowth of a New York event focused on what the protesters called social and economic inequality and corporate greed. It began at 8:30 a.m at Market Square Park with about 150 protesters — many carrying placards and chanting — who then marched to the J.P. Morgan Chase Bank Tower before moving on to City Hall.

The crowd grew to more than 200 by midmorning, according to a police officer at the scene.

“We have officially occupied Hermann Square Park,” a speaker told the crowd, referring to the reflecting pool area on the east side of City Hall. “We are not going anywhere until the people are heard.”
