My place is on the front line, but I'm stuck with cancer in this hospice room

My offline name is Shelly Leonard. (The article has some outdated info; I did not have the surgery, and have been instead admitted to hospice and am undergoing chemotherapy aimed at slowing the cancer down.)

I would love to be doing something other than fighting stupid cancer. It has hold of both of us, so our first fight is to get better so we can fight again. I've been doing battle for a year and a half. Like you, I didn't have surgery - it had already spread to my liver. Chemo has helped me live a better quality of life that I ever thought I would. I woke up worying about the chemo this morning, so I have been thinking about your positive response to it already. My big worry today was how much the pain might increase. Hospice's inpatient program has finally gotten my pain under good control--to a degree I haven't seen in years--and the thought that chemo might rattle it up again is disturbing.

I am a cancer survivor-12 years now. When I was diagnosed a wise woman told me to light candles for those fighting and one for those who are no longer with us. I am still doing it and I will think of you every night. I am too disabled to go to protests anymore. You are there is spirit if not in body and that's a good thing.

I am in a similar bind, though nothing quite as bad as cancer. I am undergoing interferon treatment for Hepatitis C, and yes it is frustrating being physically laid up while things are in such flux politically.
