1) First off, the traditional part of the party does not want to win this election.
Yes, that sounds strange, but they realize that right now, the Tea party has the upper hand, and that if the Tea Party does not get blamed for a loss, they will start outright purging the party of anyone that is not them, period. Jeb Bush and the other old school GOP do NOT want that, because they know that, unlike the Democrats, the Tea Party WILL be ruthless and not stop until everyone else is destroyed. They also know that Wall Street will gladly abandon them for the newer, slicker "trophy wife." What that means is that while Jeb and others will nod and play roles, they will also do everything they can to make sure that no one takes their seat in 2016, much the same way many democrats happily let Kerry hang to dry in 2004.
However, that does not mean that Palin and Christie are not dangerous, because they are perfect VP candidates. If Perry wins, Chris can be sued to mollify the Northeast GOP, assuring them that Chris can keep Perry from running wild. If Romney wins, the GOP knows they will have to do a LOT to make the Dixie GOP swallow the bitter pill of voting for a Mormon, who in some quarters are hated even worse than Muslims and Jews. They are already saying Romney is a leading candidate for the Antichrist. Enter either Palin or Huckabee, to convince Joe and Jane Baptist that Jesus wants Mitt.
In short, it is not the direct assault we have to worry about, but the backdoor way. A strong VP can be used to Muzzle whoever wins, making sure that any attempt to deviate is met with sabotage. Let's also not forget one danger, a real one, that if Perry or Romney do NOT please the power that be, Chris or Sarah might gladly play Lyndon Johnson to the president's kennedy, especially if Mitt wins. Like it or not, the old Confederacy is firmly in the drivers seat, and they have no problem about killing to get what they want. Not like they have not gotten away with killing off another Yankee from Massachusetts. Think about that when the people trying to get you to sit the vote out say "Romney would not be that bad compared to Obama."
