It's Time to GET MONEY OUT of politics

Bailouts. War. Unemployment. Our government is bought, and we’re angry. Now, we’re turning our anger into positive action. By signing this petition, you are joining our campaign to get money out of politics. Our politicians won’t do this. But we will. We will become an unrelenting, organized wave advocating a Constitutional amendment to get money out of politics.

As the petition grows, the wave grows. Email, Facebook, Tweet -- GET MONEY OUT. We are using The Dylan Ratigan Show on MSNBC, and our ability to influence other media outlets as a platform to force this issue to the center of the 2012 elections. Join us.

From our former Washington Lobbyist, Jimmy Williams, here is a DRAFT of our Constitutional Amendment for public debate this fall:

"No person, corporation or business entity of any type, domestic or foreign, shall be allowed to contribute money, directly or indirectly, to any candidate for Federal office or to contribute money on behalf of or opposed to any type of campaign for Federal office. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, campaign contributions to candidates for Federal office shall not constitute speech of any kind as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution or any amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Congress shall set forth a federal holiday for the purposes of voting for candidates for Federal office."

3. No person . . .
How are the campaigns to be financed? Is this suggesting strictly public financing?

Individuals with heartbeats, souls, hands and legs, individuals who were born from a human womb, should be able to donate limited sums of money to a campaign.

Otherwise, the Romneys of the world will use their own money to run for office and that will be no better than the situation we have now.

9. Donate with your efforts - on the ground footwork if you want to. As for the Romneys of the world..

I imagine this proposal would have input like that which could be discussed but if NO PERSON could contribute to ANY campaign -- then that would mean yes, public financing --where a candidate couldn't even donate his own money to his own campaign.

5. Er, doesn't this guarantee that money will have an even bigger role?

If "no person" can give money, then the richer, more connected candidate is almost guaranteed to win.

6. Wouldn't this preclude the New York Times (for example) for endorsing a candidate for President?
Surely such an editorial would constitute an "indirect" contribution by a corporation (the New York Times Company) to that candidate?

If so, is this an intended result of this proposed Constitutional amendment?

14. Unrec.
Online petitions are worse than useless, because they offer the signatory the illusion that they have done something efficacious, which makes them less likely to work for actual positive change.

However, I agree with most of the sentiment aside from the proposed limitation on any personal political donations.

And even if you don't think it would help WHY UNREC instead of just choosing to ignore it.

Are you really a Leftist Agitator or here to Agitate Leftists?

17. Well...
I totally, 100% agree with the movement to occupy Wall Street. That is a shining example of effective political action. Online petitions are not. In fact, as I said, I believe that they are counterproductive.

Do you really think that the head honchos at M$NBC are going to allow this to gain traction after a certain point? I'm fairly sure that the corporate paymasters at Comcast and GE aren't going to like that very much.

"And even if you don't think it would help WHY UNREC instead of just choosing to ignore it."

Well, an unrec, for me, is used to express dissatisfaction with the premise of a thread. Since I've articulated why I think online petitions are a waste of time (or worse), my reason for doing so should be self-explanatory.

"Are you really a Leftist Agitator or here to Agitate Leftists?"

Oh, I'm a Leftist Agitator alright. But my preferred methods are too radical for the lot of you, and thus I refrain from expressing my views on what constitutes truly effective political action, lest I catch the banhammer.

We're on the same side, we just seemingly disagree on how to accomplish our shared goals.
