What a happy coincidence...
the man who led the people in the revolts against the stamp act in Boston against Andrew Oliver, a working man called Ebenezer Macintosh, was also the leader of the yearly burning of Guy Fawkes every fifth of November.

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...

Remember, this was not a good thing in the colonial period. These were Catholics trying to impose a CATHOLIC on the throne. Religion had a different and more definite role than it does today... but this is kind of a coincidence, an echo as it were.

I mean the symbol of Guy Fawkes, a traitor, was transformed by V for Vendeta into a political symbol against the establishment. But there are some constants... we are still the rable... the rable that Wall Street fears... after all Macintosh and his merry men went over to the house of Mr. Oliver and following another tradition left it only in frame. They did not pull it down... but they were close to doing that. Today Occupy Los Angeles wants to go to Bel Air... and things should remain peaceful... but those echoes are there.

Reading on the movements that led to independence and seeing OWS is eerie to say the least...

1. We are not the "rable." I do not even know what the "rable" is.

Are you calling for revolution again on DU? Truly? No, thanks. We have a way to control the government already. We just have to use it wisely.

Edit to add: I found this definition for "rable" on Urban Dictionary. It seems apt here:

1. Rable 36 up, 3 down
Word that is repeated over and over, to either drown out someone else or just annoy.
Joe:"Hey I heard you wanted to go-

Daniel:"RABLE RABLE RABLE!"

support for revolutions. And you're the one who brought up violence, not me. Are you heading for an "Occupy" protest today? I'll be at the Minnesota one on Friday.

On Edit: BTW, neither of the two "revolutions" you mention were actually revolutions at all. Both were a duly-elected President making changes. One was good, the other bad. I was not born until the very end of the good one.

Come the Revolution, "You'll get pie in the sky..."

29. How true
C.U. should indicate to even the dimmest bulb what's happening to our country. A ruling by the SCOTUS that has a common criminal sitting flat out states that multinational corps can donate as much dough as they want and not reveal who they are.

We now have auctions, not elections~

9. The word 'rabble' has been in use since the 14th Century and
the rest of us know the meaning. For your education, here is the accepted definition, used by the rest of the world.
Definition of RABBLE
:1 a disorganized or confused collection of things
2
a : a disorganized or disorderly crowd of people : mob
b : the lowest class of people

Those who seek to diffuse understanding by claiming the language has no meaning, or an improvised meaning are engaging in tactics far more dangerous than describing class identity with the word rabble.
I also think that it is not really in the spirit of the DU rules to come and make a personal, and wildly incorrect post on a thread with an actual subject to discuss. How should this be about what word Nadin used? Why is it needed to personalize your 'argument'?

If it was a spelling error, she should have corrected it rather than resorting to a personal attack.

14. To attack and mock a person for a misspelled word which is
perfectly understood in spite of the spelling is the exact same thing as mocking a person's accent or second language syntax errors in 'real life'. Thus, to get all bent out of shape and delve into mocker and personal attacks, which is what the initial post did, is really naff. The poster very clearly understood the meaning and the word being conveyed. If spelling is the issue, one can very politely point that out, simply and directly. To claim to not understand while also tying the word 'rabble' to 'revolution' is just absurd. The meaning of the word being used was clear. A spelling error is easily addressed without personal mocker being involved. In life, there are some who flip word order or mispronounce words because of regional dialect or having English as a second language. I myself make the choice not to make fun of a person for such things, but instead to offer any corrections that might actually help the communications. Many Americans pronounce the word 'ask' as 'ax'. To take that up as response to a statement in which the word was mispronounced would be simply rude and not helpful.
The first post on this thread does not point out the spelling error at all, it just mocks the mistake without naming it. So if spelling was the objective, why not just say that?
Making fun of accents and language errors is often the realm of bigotry, and that is reason enough to take the long walk around that block, in my opinion.

20. If you wish to pretend my post was not clear, that is fine
but my post is clear. It is at least as clear as a 'spelling correction' that does not bother to point out the error, but does take time to mock the maker of the error. As I said, this is something I avoid doing, in part because mocking mistakes made by people with English second or those who have regional dialect issues is just rude, and on the internet, one rarely knows the reason for a mistake being made.
The post I made, for example, does in fact point out the spelling and meaning of the word, the actual meaning, without pointing to the person who made the mistake. I or any of us could also PM the OP. So the choice of public mockery without real correction does indicate another objective might be at play.
Sorry if you can not understand that. Of course, it was not you I addressed in the first place, and tag team tactics do not really lend support to 'let's make fun of mistakes rather than talk about issues'.

You claimed it was a spelling error. The OP made no such claim. Now you're piling on excuses. The OP could have cleared it up, but chose to attack instead. MM responded to what is actually posted. You're working on assumptions and raking fellow DUers over the coals, based on those assumptions.

19. Traditionally, the mask for the Guy is made by hand...
the one in the movie is just made to look like one of those variations which share some characteristics. That is, they own THAT version, but they do not own 'The Guy Fawkes Mask' anymore than the owners of the Great Pumpkin own the rights to all Jack O Lanterns. The movie mask is specific, the mask itself is generic and not controlled by any copyright as it is part and parcel of UK culture.
So if you need a mask, just make your own. Like children have for hundreds of years prior to the film which paid homage to those thousands of masks that came before it.
The effigy of the Guy is central to the holiday about him, and the mask is central to the effigy. So don't buy or use the version made for the film, that's all. Do an images search on Google for 'Guy Fawkes Masks' and instantly you will see many versions, going back for decades, in many forms, in many artistic styles. Of course also plenty from the film, but again, the film was using an existing image, and only their specific design and product is in any way connected to the film or the owners of the film.
No one owns Guy Fawkes.
