Lincoln definitely said this, however (incl. citation)
"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."

-- December 3, 1861 - Lincoln's First Annual Message to Congress

I don't think the Repukes would care to have this quoted back at them.

1. Part of the opposition to slavery came out of the "free soil" movement.
The view was that slavery undermined not just the slave, but also the dignity of free men's labor.

2. Free labor, Free soil - can't have one without the other.

What he is saying there is that he believes in the LABOR THEORY of VALUE - which is pretty meaningful if you think about it. (Preferring Marx to Smith was just as radical then as it is today. And yes, "Das Kapital" had not been published, but the Labor Theory of Value was around long before that book was written.

That's the point I was trying to make in that battlefield of a thread that you are referring to.

3. Marx and Lincon even wrote a few letters back and forth as well.
I'll try and post them later if anyone is interested. They were on the topic of slavery though, not economics.

4. Labor was first going all the way back to the Stone Age.
Action or inaction precedes results.

Kicked and recommended.

Thanks for the thread, hifiguy.

Fox News told me that the rich create wealth, of course so did Pinochet.

8. Pinochet only believed it
because that monumental asswipe and criminal-against-humanity Milton Friedman told him it was so.
