In protest to Italy’s proposed wiretapping laws, the Italian version of Wikipedia has been hidden. Users that are looking for Italian Wikipedia will be met with a page that details how Italy’s pending Internet laws could put the Italian edition of the online, open-source encyclopedia in danger of being removed.
It explains that: “the page you want still exists and is only hidden, but the risk is that soon we will be forced to actually delete it. Unfortunately, the very pillars on which Wikipedia has been built – neutrality, freedom, and verifiability of its contents – are likely to be heavily compromised” by a law proposal known as “Wiretapping Act.”
The law would require sites to publish corrections of items deemed objectionable within 48 hours, without any kind of review.
Any individual who feels offended by an item on a blog or online publication can request a correction, regardless of whether or not the item is true and without verification that it’s actually offensive.
