The difference between Horatio Alger stories and Santa Claus stories
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 10:01 PM by Kievan Rus
One group of stories are maudlin, overly sentimental tales that are frequently taught to young children and presented to them as factual, and the hearts and minds of the listeners are crushed when they learn said stories are fiction.

The other group of stories are about a big guy in a red suit and are most often told during December.

Seriously though, perhaps the biggest reason why a large number of the 99% vote Republican, watch Faux News, and show disdain for Occupy Wall Street is all the Horatio Alger bullshit that they too will be rich one day. Herman's Cain's ridiculous comments that the Occupy Wall Street protesters can only blame themselves for their predicament is a prime example of this.

1. The Fun Part, Sir, Is That Boys Rise In Alger's Stories By Service To The Rich, Not Hard Work
The turning point is some spectacular deed, saving a rich child from drowning or from being run over by a street-car, after which the child's father rewards the street urchin handsomely.
