Vandals set loose 40,000 baby salmon in North Bay

Salmon pens at Romberg Tiburon Center were cut last night releasing fish, that Casa Grande High...«12345»
Some 40,000 juvenile chinook salmon were set loose into the bay from Tiburon when vandals cut lines supporting the pens in which they were held.

The action shortchanges a planned year-end celebration for high school students who raised the fish from eggs and had planned to see them off at the end of the month as part of the Tiburon Salmon Institute's annual program.

"It was unreal to hear about it," said Dan Hubacker, the teacher who heads the salmon program at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, where the fish were reared. "The kids put a lot of energy into the program. Now I have to break the news that their fish are gone. I spoke to the student leader of the program and he was irate."

8. Yeah, my first thought was PETAphiles.
It's just nasty enough to be them.

Of course, the "bait" idea is also credible, if stupidly infeasible.

7. This was not a 'fish farming' operation - the fish were going to be
released. I don't see why PETA would have any interest in it.

13.  I don't think PETA is involved but they don't necessarily condone this form of fish farming
It can be argued that captive fish breeding dilutes the gene pool and produces weaker fish.

I look at it as a fifty percent of everything or a hundred percent of nothing endeavor.

10. Contrary to popular belief, PETA doesn't 'do' direct action
They may applaud people who do so but they themselves don't do it. For one, they are on the FBI's watch list as a possible domestic terrorist organization but they are an organization that focuses on outreach.

11. Or was it Hank Williams Jr.?
I know nothing about the man, as evidenced by this ridiculous question, but I think I'll just post it here because I don't like him. Then others who also know nothing about him can reply to this and we've got ourselves a nice little subthread going in which we can hate on the man who had nothing to do with it.

9. Dimes to donuts, the criminals that released the fish are the same....
assholes that shoot sea lions feeding on 'their' fish. Bank on it.

Romberg Tiburon Center is located at the old navy net depot, a pretty succulent piece of real estate.

12. Those "assholes" that shoot sea lions are the government...
and I agree they are assholes for it. But I don't think the government released the fish.

20. LOL!
In Oregon they are trapping and killing sea lions who have been identified as "eating fish". Seriously. It's been started and stopped a few times by lawsuits. And now we find out that schoolkids are hoarding the salmon!!

18. Not in CA --
There is a very long history of local fisherman shooting and killing sea lions because they compete for the same product.

17. They ought to just have the celebration anyway.
Yes, the fish were maliciously released a few weeks early, but it's not so early as to void the efforts of the students to raise them. They did well, the can celebrate a job well done without the largely symbolic aspect of the formal release.
