Idea: ReOccupy Detroit, and New Orleans, and...
In the cities that have really been ravaged by the crisis (in NOLA's case, going back to "Heckuvajob Brownie!"), why not march to a blighted neighborhood and squat the empty houses all at once? *(Cleveland would also be another good candidate.)

h/t to my old NOLA roommate John, who left to squat a house nearby back in the '90s.

See? Steve Jobs wasn't the only visionary in Silicon Valley. :-)

1. Kick and rec
When people are homeless, it's crime against humanity to keep homes empty. When people are hungry, it's crime against humanity to throw good food into waste bin instead of serving those who need.

2. In NOLA that's become a bit impractical
Houses which have gone completely unattended since Katrina are pretty much not places you would want to stay, ravaged by mold and structural decay. The occasional house that has been properly gutted to preserve it but is unoccupied is probably owned by someone who plans to finish or sell it some day. The vast majority of truly abandoned houses, particularly in places like the 9th ward, have been razed. You could camp out on the slabs though.

It's a bit different than in places like Detroit, where the houses were abandoned without being flooded first, and deterioration is taking a more normal course.
