Iowa City protesters plan to ignore city ordinance

IOWA CITY, Iowa— Anti-Wall Street protesters who plan to indefinitely occupy an Iowa City park said Thursday they will ignore an ordinance that requires them to get permission to be there after 11 p.m., setting up a potential dispute with city officials.

Members of the Occupy Iowa City group decided Wednesday they would camp out at College Green Park in a residential neighborhood near downtown where many University of Iowa students live starting at 6 p.m. Friday. They say they plan to stay there indefinitely as part of the protest against Wall Street and large corporations that started in New York City last month and is spreading to other parts of the country. ... more

2. KCRG evening news interviewed one of the organizers who said
that he believed that the constitutional right to free assembly trumps city ordinances and one rep from the police department said that demonstrators in IC generally are respectful of the community so they will only interfere if there is conflict. They plan a long occupation. I will go in when I can.

3. As long as the campus cops stay away
I don't think there will be much of a problem. University of Iowa police are the ones that have been rousting the students downtown, so let's hope they aren't allowed near the protesters.
