And I will never, ever apologize for America. …I believe we are an exceptional country with a unique destiny and role in the world. Not exceptional, as the President has derisively said, in the way that the British think Great Britain is exceptional or the Greeks think Greece is exceptional. In Barack Obama’s profoundly mistaken view, there is nothing unique about the United States.” --Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, October 7, 2011
___ Mitt Romney on Friday once again suggested that President Obama went on an “apology tour,” which we have previously labeled a Four-Pinocchio falsehood (
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2011/02/obamas_apology_tour.html). This is clearly a difficult concept for the GOP candidates to give up, since he titled his recent campaign book “No Apology.”
This time, in his major foreign-policy speech, Romney doesn’t actually say the words “apology tour.” But he does mischaracterize Obama’s comments about whether the United States is exceptional. The president’s comments were not derisive in the least. If anything, they were discursive, since it took Obama a while to get to the point.
“I'm enormously proud of my country and its role and history in the world,” Obama said right after the statement about Britain and Greece.
Obama continued: “If you think of our current situation, the United States remains the largest economy in the world. We have unmatched military capability. And I think that we have a core set of values that are enshrined in our Constitution, in our body of law, in our democratic practices, in our belief in free speech and equality, that, though imperfect, are exceptional.” So Romney is clearly wrong when he charges that Obama believes there is nothing unique about the United States.
