The Republican Governors Association violated Vermont campaign finance laws when it paid for two candidate-specific political advertisements that aired during the 2010 gubernatorial race but didn't register or file financial disclosure reports as required.
Superior Court Judge Geoffrey Crawford's decision in this case parallels his June ruling involving Green Mountain Future, an organization largely funded by the Democratic Governors Association. It, too, ran attack ads during the gubernatorial campaign and didn't register or file financial disclosure reports.
The office of the Vermont Attorney General filed lawsuits in both cases in October 2010. Attorney General William Sorrell applauded the two decisions Thursday. "This office will continue to evenhandedly enforce Vermont's campaign finance laws."
