But I think I'm eventually going to need some more substantial protein. For ice cream though, I'll stick to B&J's.

9. Very few stores carry it. Way too expensive for most people.
Most folks don't want to mix political activism with their ice cream. They just want a decent ice cream at a reasonable price. Down here that usually means Blue Bell.

26. It's no more expensive than Haagen Dazs
and I've never been to a grocery store in the US that didn't carry at least a few flavors of Ben & Jerry's including Albertsons, the local discount grocery store.

To be honest, I'd probably buy Cherry Garcia if Hitler made it, but I'm glad that a company with good labor relations and political creds makes it instead. I go for Ben & Jerry's over Haagen Dazs because I think the company is responsible and relatively eco-friendly.

It's perfectly affordable if you don't eat ice cream by the gallon. And cheap ice cream is mostly beaten-in air so you're not actually saving any real money by buying discount brands. That doesn't even get into the issues with preservatives. Better for your health and your wallet to buy the real stuff and just eat reasonable portions of it.

27. Walmart carries it in my town,
as does BiLo, Country Mart, even Walgreens. It's expensive but some of the major flavors (New York Super Chunk Fudge, for example) are almost always sold out.

People around here view it as a treat that they can still afford once a month and they love it.

14. Ben & Jerry no longer own the company. They sold it to a British-Dutch corporation called Unilever.
Unilever is a massive, multinational corporation, so I guess we just received our first major corporate "sponsor."

The fact they seem so interested in Wall Street reform is interesting to me. Are they really supportive of the cause, or do they have another angle?

There might be specific instances where a physician might advise a patient to consume more calories. But generally speaking most of us take in too many calories and as you know we have an obesity epidemic.

I have to stop on the way home for kitty litter, might as well pick up some Cherry Garcia.

From some of the comments here, B&J is the new Apple. Sorry, love it and will stick with it. Same as Apple. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that the majority of other ice cream companies in this country can't hold a candle to their ingredients and messaging...not to mention they friggin rock.

We need a B&J Apple ice cream!!!

25. It was bought with, and owned by, money from the Belgian Congo Plantation trade
A couple of very, very uncool products:

Fair & Lovely Skin Whitening Cream, "The advertisements depicted dejected, dark-skinned women, who had been snubbed by employers and men, suddenly acquiring new boyfriends and glamorous careers after the cream had lightened their skin."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1556188/Indias-hue-and-cry-over-paler-skin.html
http://slacko.com/current-affairs/fair-lovely-desi-obsession-white-skin-tone.html

And in Austria, "The Austrian branch of Unilever (Eskimo) is producing and marketing an ice-cream under the name Mohr im Hemd. "Mohr" (moor), is a colonial German word for African or black people, has a heavily colonialist and racist connotation.,<36><37> "Mohr im Hemd" (moor in the shirt) is a traditional Austrian chocolate speciality which refers to naked, "wild" Africans."

29. this from the Ben and Jerry's website regarding franchise inquiries
Edited on Fri Oct-07-11 05:54 PM by Douglas Carpenter
To be a Ben & Jerry's franchisee is to challenge yourself to operate a socially responsible business in every way possible. Our franchisees uphold our three-part mission statement. They believe in our values and they aren't afraid to stand up for something, like the environment, marriage equality or sensible federal budget priorities. They are in love with representing Ben & Jerry's in their neighborhoods, their cities, and their towns.

http://www.benjerry.com/scoop-shops/franchise-opportunities/

.

But basically I just like Ben and Jerry's the most. I like names of their products like Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia.

30. Unilever acquisition of Ben & Jerry's
On August 3, 2000, Ben & Jerry's was acquired by Unilever, a British-Dutch food company with distribution in 100 countries. Many of our customers have been understandably concerned that the change in ownership does not signal a change in our mission. We are happy to assure you that Unilever supports the guiding principles that have been fundamental to our business from the beginning: to look for innovative ways to improve the quality of life of the community in every business decision that we make.

http://benjerry.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/136/~/unilever-acquisition-of-ben-%26-jerry's

I'm sure that Unilever is cool with the social activism schtick, so long as it sells ice cream. Unilever revenues were €44.262 billion in 2010.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unilever
The company was founded on turning palm oil into margarine and soap.

Edited on Fri Oct-07-11 08:51 PM by totodeinhere
Most of their varieties are extremely high in calories compared to plain generic ice cream. Personally I stay away from all ice cream and stick to sorbet.

I agree wholeheartedly with the board's statement, but my health comes first.
