34. No it wasn't.
I'm as liberal as they come and I couldn't stomach Lawrence's horrible interview last night. I thought it was cheap.

I'm no fan of Cain at all and I love Lawrence, but last night was pathetic IMO.

The problem with ReTHUG morons is that they write all this crap in books and can't defend it when intelligent people interview them.
Cain is a tool.

When I saw Cain on LO"s show I couldn't stand to watch it, even though I knew LO would tear him apart. I'm sorry I didn't watch all of it. They should put it on DVD.

10. Personally, I saw the part where O'Donnell tried to accuse Cain . . .
of avoiding the Vietnam era draft and couldn't bear to listen anymore. It's ridiculous to bring that issue up. From Cain's answer, his position was similar to Bill Clinton's. So what? What a waste of interview time. There is so much wrong with Cain's positions on most major issues, yet O'Donnell focuses on this? IMHO that little sideshow made O'Donnell look stupid and may have actually scored points for Cain. I didn't watch the whole interview, so maybe the rest wasn't as bad as the piece I heard.

42. I think it's a fair question to old men who advocate sending young men to war
I don't think it's a "ridiculous" question to ask these extremely pro-war political figures why fighting is such a great idea... except for them.

43. Two things . . .
O'Donnell was also eligible for draft and did not serve. A bit hypocritical to grill Cain and act offended that he didn't enlist. Cain has a history with FDIC - maybe that would have been something more interesting to explore

45. O'Donnell isn't running for President. Cain is.
The President has the power to send people to fight and die. TV interviewers don't. Cain not only seeks that power, he has but a strong proponent of the Iraq war and militarism in general. Just not when it was him that was going to get shot at. The issue shouldn't be avoiding service in Vietnam. Hell I applaud anyone who was smart enough or lucky enough to avoid that illegal and immoral war. The issue is being a chickenhawk. O'Donnell is hardly an advocate for war. Thus the fact that he didn't serve isn't relevant as to why it's an important question to ask Cain. Because, like so many of the loudest voices for sending people to die, it turns out that Cain wouldn't go himself. You may not care. I care. Is it the only issue they should focus on? Hardly. But it's not irrelevant.

14. Nobody does it like Lawrence.
He sticks in the knife of truth and twists it. Like last night, when Herman Cain said he was in high school and not thinking about marching for civil rights or voter rights. Lawrence pointed out to him that he was attending Morehouse College in 1963. He was not in high school. He told him to his face that he was a liar, without saying the word. No wonder they are angry. :-)

17. He lied about the draft lottery also
He said he got a high number and didn't have to go, implying that he went through only one lottery. However if he started college in '63, he would have gone through 10 lottery cycles before the lottery ended in '73.

18. Check your facts . . .
Wikipedia - Draft Lottery

On December 1, 1969, the Selective Service System of the United States conducted two lotteries to determine the order of call to military service in the Vietnam War for men born between 1944 and 1950

Bad policy, I know - However the point remains that he was likely exposed to more than one lottery as it lasted from 69 to 73

40. Actually, not . . .
The draft lottery (read Wikipedia) was organized by birth year as well as birth date. The first lottery in '69 was for males born between 1944 and 1950; 1970 - 1951; 1971-75 - 1952 to 1956. Once a man made it through the lottery for his birth year, he was no longer subject to draft.

47. I guess Cain got a college deferment...so when did he graduate?
Usually at graduation the student gets redesignated as 1A and at that time 1968-69 would expect a notice from the draft board in 2 or 3 months. When they went to the lottery based on birthday of course that changed. Fortunately there were a lot of ways to get defered back then and those with the slightest of resources and street smarts and a strong desire to avoid Nam could usually find a way. Others went to jail, canada or hiding. Many though had been brainwashed by a childhood of prowar Hollywood movies, patriotic hyperbole, and general go along, get along attitude which ended in their demise. Friends of mine included.

37. I thought they both looked bad
LO was at his worst when he was questioning Cain's Vietnam era service.

I don't even know what he was charging him with? Did he think Cain had a rich daddy calling senators for him like Bush did?

When Cain said he was in a vital industry working as a mathemetician for the navy in a ballistic missile program as a young black man right out of school in the south in the sixties, I guess unless I knew he was lying, my answer would have been, "wow, well congratulations to you."

Instead LO said he should have given up his job and volunteered for the army. Absolutely ridiculous. I thought, I wonder what LO's opinion of Bill Clinton's draft record was? Why do I think he wasn't nearly as upset about Bill.

I'm going to avoid LO for a few days.
