Manchester school bans 'dangerous' footballs from the playground

(UK) School children have been told to use foam footballs in the playground in a health and safety crackdown.

Newall Green Primary School in Wythenshawe brought in a ban on ‘proper’ footballs after a child was injured when he was accidentally hit.

Headteacher Sarah Rudd banned breaktime kickabouts for several weeks while foam balls were ordered. They are now the only balls children are allowed to play with during breaks. Several parents have complained that the ban is an overreaction.

Dad Liam Farrell, of Painswick Road, Wythenshawe, has two children at the school, including son Donovan, 10.

He said: “I think it’s wrong, especially when the government is trying to get children more fit and active. There’s quite a few parents who aren’t happy.

2. Clearly you should have sued the inventor of calcium for terrible engineering!
Wonder what those guys would think of me breaking a thumb on a homemade bokken at school once. ;)

4. We used to play "insanity ball" during lunch break at our school.
Football on the frozen, icy soccer field that was literally like a skating rink. Constantly falling, hurting wrists, elbows and heads. But you learned the boundaries of what you could do, and at what point it became "too stupid". Gained an intimate respect for icy, slippery surfaces, and I'm sure I'm a more cautious winter driver as a result.

Playing is an important part of learning!!
