1. Now you know we are not to question why.
Ours is just to do or die.

3. It always amuses me when signs about teachers are full of errors.
Maybe this sign maker's heart was in the right place, but his brain needed some more classroom time.

4. Some time spent diagramming the sentence would do a world of good.
;-)

I too like the sentiment, but where's my red pen?

5. ;)
"What kind of person believes there is nothing wrong with demanding that the educators of our children take a 20% cut in their $50,000 salaries, while saying it is wrong to tax millionaires an additional 3%?"

Not perfect, but less likely to meet the red-pen wrath of Mrs. Crabapple.

6. My swipe
"What kind of person thinks a teacher earning $50,000 should take a 20% pay cut, but it's wrong to tax millionaires an additional 3%?"

I'm all about as few words as possible. I could probably even shave a few more if I tried hard enough. I'd probably also flip it for maximum impact.

What kind of person thinks its wrong to tax millionaires an additional 3%, but thinks a teacher earning just %50,000 a year should take a 20% pay cut?

;-)

7. Much better.
I'm constantly battling the headline writers at the agency...especially since I'm the guy who has to make the words fit. Nicely done.

8. I vote for the final rewrite -- if you'll add an apostrophe to "its"
and correct the one % sign to a $ sign. Well done.

23. I think you need a "thinks" after the "but" in the first version
I love the second one though, with the minor correction already mentioned.

9. I was gonna guess that you two are under age 30
but not with the diagramming remark.

I don't see a screaming need for a red pen myself, and I am not sure why you both want to change "sort" to "kind", which seems like a huge mistake.

Also, I do not think shorter is always better. If people have to work a little bit, then the reward seems bigger.

But k&r for sentiment.

25. Kind vs. Like = a matter of stylistic preference
Usually, but not always, as described below:

1. What is your blood type?
(Expected answer is a precise named category.)

2. What sort of prices do they charge?
(Expected answer is a description rather than a named category.)

3. What kind of dog is that?
(Probable answer is a named category, but not necessarily as precise as 1 above.
A descriptive answer is also possible.)

So …

‘type‘ usually means a precisely defined category.
‘sort‘ is more general, often about character rather than definition and can be used in a negative way e.g. What sort of person would do a terrible thing like that?
‘kind‘ is about half way between, usually referring to large categories or families of things that are naturally related.

-------------

Was the "sort" in the original referring to the character of the people or to the group to which they belonged, or a bit of both?

26. that would be my point about sort vs. kind
A kind is more of a fixed category. Your kind is gonna be your kind no matter what the person does. A black person will always be black. A short person will always be short. Using "kind" seems to me that you are judging people not by the "content of their character" by more by the "color of their skin" or some other sorting characteristic used to divide one group of humans from another.

A "sort" of person can always become a better sort.

10. I can see three sorts of people in that
1. those who are millionaires
2. those who think they will be millionaires
3. those making $8 or $9 an hour who think that $50,000 is a hell of a lot of money

I'd like #3 to move to the top of the list. It would finally give me the opportunity to scream out I'm #1! :)

15. Right now I'd be lucky to make $8 an hour
but I do NOT want to give teachers a 20% pay cut to reduce millionaires' taxes by 3%, so maybe just 1 and 2.

14. 3% is getting off light, they need to be taxed like 10% - 15%.
And their precious profits should be taxed like we tax lottery winnings.
