19. My kids are half FrenchCanadian mixed with Mi'kmaq

Alot of the French Canadian descendants in my area have the same mix.

In fact, that's a Mi'kmaq flag I have there under my screen name.

There are a couple of family names on my dad's side I can trace all the way back to France in the late 16th - early 17th Centuries.

Auclair...Roussel...Degre'...Guertin

One of my female ancestors came to Canada as a Filles du Roi.


I'm having a bit of trouble with my mom's side. Her mom had like six sisters, and her dad's origins are a bit sketchy. All I know is that a great grandfather and grandmother of my mom's lived in Maine, in Aroostook County, and may also have been of Mi'kmaq origin.

It's been so much fun discovering this stuff

Since the border didn't exist before European occupation of the continent. The Name Canada bears this out, as it is derived from an Iroquoi word, a People whose territory spanned from Quebec to Kentucky.

My blood ancestry is both Native American and "Pilgrim" ( circa 1640's) who still reside in Plymouth and Kingstown, MA.

St. Paddy's day also messes me up because I was adopted and raised by a completely Irish family, yet am Wiccan...

He and his band of disaffected buds were responsible for trading for land from the Montauk on eastern Long Island. Over time these illegal immigrants actually purchased the land, paying for it multiple times when the Montauk determined the original deal had been unfair. The novelty of 'buying' land and the multiple payments undoubtedly contributed to the notion that the original European families were just leasing. By the end of the 1600's the Europeans refused to pay when additional payments were sought.

A further complication of the nature of this land grabbing is what seems to be the disputed nature of the real estate claims among the pre-European inhabitants themselves. Although the Montauk sold the land to the Europeans it might not have been theirs to trade in the first place. At least the Narragansett tribe felt that way, and they went to war with the Montauk shortly AFTER the sale of the land to the Europeans.
