DCCC asks supporters to sign petition in support of Occupy Wall Street
DCCC asks supporters to sign petition in support of Occupy Wall Street
By Daniel Strauss - 10/10/11 10:54 AM ET

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is asking supporters to sign a petition in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

"Protestors are assembling in New York and around the country to let billionaires, big oil and big bankers know that we’re not going to let the richest 1% force draconian economic policies and massive cuts to crucial programs on Main Street Americans," the DCCC email sent out Monday reads.

As the anti-corporate demonstrations that began on Sept. 17 in New York continue, individual Democratic legislators have come out in support of the movement.

“We share the anger and frustration of so many Americans who have seen the enormous toll that an unchecked Wall Street has taken on the overwhelming majority of Americans while benefitting the super wealthy,” Reps. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) said in a joint statement last week.

The DCCC email, though, is one of the earliest expressions of support by an established Democratic campaigning organization.

3. As in actually *doing* anything constructive, ya mean?
No..just getting their face in front of the camera, so to speak.

4. Okay, I see the negative remarks already fill this post. Are you guys
saying the Keith Ellison is doing this just to get his picture in the papers? I highly doubt. He is a very outspoken progressive who represents people in the district where OccupyMN is being held. And he agrees with them. As far as I can see he is not trying to take them over - just agree with them. Maybe he should have made a snide remark like Cain or Newtie or some of the other good old boys. Then it would be just fine.

6. Individual legislators weighing in is fine.
It's the partisan organizations that I have a problem with when we're trying to build a coalition.

5. DCCC and MoveOn are opportunists, IMO.
Especially, DCCC, which has actively worked AGAINST progressive Democrats for years. We shouldn't let them co-opt the movement.

I believe this movement will have much more power if it remains nonpartisan. Just my opinion.

8. Pretty much an email collection machine, as my inbox will attest to ;-)

On edit - I like what Moveon does, but I *do* feel that a lot of their and other online petitions don't serve much purpose other than collecting email of potential supporters/donors.
