SEATTLE – Former Gov. Al Rosellini has died at the age of 101, according to the care facility where he lived.
Rosellini served two terms as governor. The Democrat was first elected in 1956 and re-elected in 1960. He was defeated in his race for third term in 1964, losing to Republican candidate Daniel Evans.
According to Historylink.org, Rosellini is credited with creating a separate justice and prison system for juveniles, modernizing the mental health system, and increasing aid to universities and colleges. In addition, he accelerated road construction, set up a merit system for state employees, and established the Department of Commerce and Economic Development.
Under his leadership, the Legislature passed enabling legislation for the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle (Metro, now part of King County) and Seattle's "Century 21" world's fair.
