Days after a CIA drone firing Hellfire missiles obliterated an al-Qaeda spiritual leader, one of his disciples; Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, faces a different sort of American justice.

The trial of the so-called ‘underwear’ bomber who tried to blow up a packed airliner approaching at Detroit on Christmas Day 2009 got under way with the 24-year-old Nigerian son of a prominent banker delivering odd outbursts in the courtroom.

“Anwar is alive” insisted the accused bomber, who also wanted to swap his oversize prison garb for a Yemini cloak and traditional dagger. U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds denied the dagger. She appears set to allow Mr. Abdulmutallab to conduct his own defence (he has a legal advisor) without letting him turn the courtroom into a stage for espousing jihadist rhetoric.

“The mujaheddin will wipe out the U.S. - the cancer U.S.,” warned the young Nigerian, who spent some time during jury selection with his feet up on the defence table....
