IPhone 4S Preorders Top Million in a Day: Apple...preorders sold out.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) received more than a million preorders for the iPhone 4S in a single day, putting the company on a record-setting sales pace ahead of the device’s Oct. 14 release.

The preorders topped the previous record of 600,000 set by the iPhone 4 last year, Cupertino, California-based Apple said today in a statement. Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S last week, pricing it at $199, $299 and $399, depending on the features.

The rush signals that there’s pent-up demand for the new model, which was released 16 months after the last one -- a longer wait than with previous iPhone releases. The preorders indicate Apple may sell nearly 3 million in the first weekend, almost double the number sold in the opening weekend last year, said Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets. The sales also suggest that customers were unfazed by Apple not updating the iPhone’s body design.

“The early momentum of the iPhone 4S reaffirms Apple’s leadership in smartphones,” said Mark Moskowitz, an analyst at JPMorgan & Chase Co. The strength of the orders should silence those who said the lack of a redesigned body on the iPhone 4S would deter buyers, he said.

iPhone 4S pre-orders sell out

Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S sold out in the first day of availability, according to shipping estimates on Apple's Web

The iPhone 4S went on pre-order in the predawn hours on Friday. Carrier AT&T called it its most successful iPhone launch ever, with more than 200,000 orders in the first 12 hours.

Users looking to pre-order the iPhone 4S now are seeing shipping estimates of one to two weeks.

Customers can still get an iPhone 4S this coming Friday, though, if they wait in line at an Apple Store or at other retail partners.

2. I want one just for the new camera, but I'm not eligible for discounted pricing until next year.
So it will be the iPhone 5 for me.

6. The messed up part is you can't get a discount even if you did a new 2 year contract
These telcos are so effin greedy.

My friend is "eligible for an upgrade" in December. If she wanted a iPhone 4S right now, though, she would have to pay the full $800 price for the phone.

I know the "discount" reflects a subsidy, but they could prorate that stuff for existing customers.

28. Bullshit. Tiawan, South Korea, and Mexico manufacture a lot of Android phones*.
Apple has the distinction that they use FOXCONN for their mainboards which puts a good deal of the manufacturing in a Chinese human factory farm. Apple knows how to make money.

*LG, Samsung, HTC, RIM, Nokia, etc.

9. I have an iphone now, and I'm ready for something different.
My parents and my brothers all have various Motorola DROID configs - and the reception, features and useability on those phones is far superior to my Flash-less iPhone 4 it isn't even funny!

Lisa works tirelessly with the original creators to create something new and different - but in the end, the owners of the company release the same old crap but with a new hat, and the masses go crazy over it. Gotta love it!
