DeFazio: Obama says failure on tax deal would mean ‘end of his presidency’
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 12:04 PM by Poll_Blind
Mods, there is another thread about this but the headline (which the original OP was forced to use because of LBN rules) is totally misleading. This is a different article, same subject, accurate headline.

From RawStory:
A Democratic lawmaker said President Barack Obama is warning members of his party that failure on the tax deal would doom his presidency, igniting plenty of chatter while earning a staunch rebuke from the White House.

Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) said Wednesday on CNN the president is furiously making phone calls to whip up support for the tax cut compromise struck he struck with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

"The White House is putting on tremendous pressure, making phone calls. The president is making phone calls saying this is the end of his presidency if he doesn't get this bad deal," DeFazio told Eliot Spitzer on "Parker/Spitzer."

The White House forcefully denied DeFazio's charge.

--snip--

Regardless, it's an argument Obama is said to have used during the health care debate, after months of wrangling led to a last-ditch attempt by the White House to pick off just enough recalcitrant Democrats to squeeze the reform legislation through.

The FULL intewview on Parker/Spitzer can be viewed here on the DU Video forum.

DeFazio does an excellent job explaining how Obama's presidency is in much deeper shit if he passes this trainwreck than if they wait till the new year to do it and how incredibly dangerous this is to Social Security. DeFazio nails it.

1. ""Asked if he had personally received such a phone call, DeFazio said he had not"
That's from one of the other stories on this

He claims that he heard this from one person (who he will not name). Sorry not very credible.

Headline grabbing, but not credible.

It is like you or I saying "I read it on the internet it must be TRUE!1!"

2. To be fair, Thom Hartmann said something similar the other day.
Pass it now, helps Obama. Pass it next month, helps Republicans in 2012.

5. Obama has said that
he would rather be a good one term President than a mediocre two term President so why then doesn't he do the right thing and tell the people we can't afford this and what is at stake if the tax cuts are extended?

7. I don't CARE about your Presidency, Obama
I CARE about our country.
Do the right thing for the country and the votes will follow--if you do the bidding of the elite, then the votes won't.
It is very simple, really.
But if the choice comes for our country to survive or you to survive...it was nice knowing you.

16. EXACTLY
Obama keeping his job is not my priority and it shouldn't be his. Doing the best thing for the country and the majority of Americans should be the priority for him.

9. Given the damage he's willing to inflict on the American people, the end of
his presidency would be a positive outcome.

11. I find it hard to tell lies from the truth in today's politics
I will sit back and let the chips fall.

It is my opinion this is a garbage bill and should be defeated
and the president was not guaranteed 8 years
