CNN Posts video of shootout robbery where you see people getting shot on their website.
Edited on Tue Oct-11-11 09:46 AM by Renew Deal
This seems pretty unusual for an MSM site. This video is of a gas station robbery where there is a shootout between the workers and robbers. 2 people are shot. CNN posted the video on their site and put it on the main page. Is this appropriate on a mainstream site? I guess they accomplished their goals, because it's getting clicks.

http://cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2011/10/11/am-robbery-clerk-fight-back.cnn.html

Aside from that, the way this video is presented is disturbing. It is presented as a blooper reel. You'd think they were talking about a dolphin balancing a beach ball or something.

1. Yes. I am getting tired of the cleaned up media
it is time people see the results of real violence.

3. Reminds me of the Vietnam war ... none really got the horror of the violence until
it was aired on TV every night.

22. Vietnam coverage and footage of the attacks on civil rights workers are the only...
times that television has made a positive contribution to American society.
Everything else has been amusement and manipulation.

23. Exactly!!! And now IMO each day it becomes more and more just a tool of propaganda now we
have what, only about 5 major media conglomerates, and I'm sure at some level some of them talk among themselves as to the propaganda agenda. Dictators in history would have loved this environment.

4. Can you imagine Walter Cronkite reporting that? And in such a giddy manner as shown in the video?

6. I should have mentioned that.
It was presented as a blooper clip when in reality it is a very violent confrontation.

10. I'm not sure I'm looking for that.
And that's why I didn't expect it on CNN.com. I've watched a couple of those videos when there's a big story like the LA bank robbery or the Atlanta bar shooting. But generally I'm not looking for that sort of thing.

12. Is that unusual?
When I was a child (I don't remember the year, I think I was about ten?) there was a hostage taking at a store near my house. Several of the hostages were shot and killed, then police cut through the wall and shot most of the hostage takers. The video was shown on the news, and was later used in a bunch of those shows with footage of car chases and such.

13. Yes, US Press has shied away from showing vids like that
since at least the 1980s... they are highly unusual.

There is more, they shy away from showing dead bodies as well.

15. The incident I was talking about was in 1991. It was shown live on the news.
And video was extensively replayed later. I remember it really well, because it happened a few blocks from where I grew up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_Sacramento_hostage_crisis

18. people got shot on their website?
Aside from the grammar, my apologies for the snark, it is inappropriate. MSM exists to sell ad space and this is a good example of that. "Tune in for the shooting!!!!" then an ad. Inappropriate.

20. Real shootings of actual people are OK -- dramatized shootings of fictional characters are not
Actual footage of real killing, complete with blood, gore and the agony of death inform people of real situations.

Dramatized shootings, as in cop shows or war movies, portray murder or killing in a sanitized and false way, which desensitises people to the true nature of the acts.
