I'm about to cry: just received my first eviction notice
I work damn hard, I've been eating nothing but rice and ramun and the food donated to the OccupyAustin movement. I'm seaching feverishly for a second job. Other than cigarettes I have been able to keep "luxury" spending down to $15 a week and still I can't pay my fucking rent or utilities. I made $9 for an 8 hour shift on thurs. I can't tell whether I'm more angry, sad, or disappointed in myself but I do know thy all of the strides I have taken to better myself, all the wonderful purpose I have have obtained, all the sacrifices I have made to help others, all the progress I've made in battling my depression and insomnia just went out the window. Goddamnit I am one of the hardest working, most dedicated, level headed and intelligent employees most businesses will ever have, why the fuck can't this work for me? When is the good kharma gonna come back around? When God when will I not have to continuously struggle just to have peace of mind? Will never give up, I know I have great things I can do in the future to help others. From the horses mouth I have already saved lives and souls, and it is that knowledge, that purpose, that I can and do make positive differences in people's lives that keeps me going, as well as my friend's children, my nieces and nephews that I love more than anything on this earth and I need to be there for them. Sometimes connection through serendipity is far thicker than blood. But sometimes, I just want to roll over and stay in dream.

4. i am not spamming
i have literally been doing these for extra income... you may not have a bank account online, but if you do.... you can do the surveys let the money be recognized the next day or so and transfer to bank account..

Amazon turks...... most are college surveys... be careful for high dollar ones as they can be spam.... I normally do .10 and filter by quickest ones...

5. Here's an idea:
Go apply for food stamps tomorrow morning. Should help and given what you said here I'm guessing you can probably max out the benefit. Also, check out unemployment insurance. You don't have to actually lose your job to get it. If you've had your hours seriously cut back or taken pay cuts you should still be able to get unemployment insurance (though you need some employment history to qualify). Check into both of those. Maybe you can get one or the other, or even both.

Stay tough man, good things always come around.

6. Don't panic. The eviction process takes time and you can use that time to figure out your next step
Keep looking for opportunities. If making $9 for 8 hours of work is a common thing, you might want to quit that job. Think about all the places you might be able to go and good luck.

10. little employment tip
Think wide too... think about jobs that kind of sound like they suck and what companies get really busy this time of year. Everybody goes and applies at the mall and at all the stores (and the stores are hiring for the holidays) but if everybody applies, only a few get jobs.

Not too many people applying to work at UPS. And UPS is doing a lot of hiring right now to handle the holiday season. It's the busiest time of the year for them. All nighttime jobs... go show up at a warehouse and throw boxes around (some of the jobs are very physical, some are pretty easy - if you don't look super strong they'll find you an easier job). It's actually not that bad. Aside from your first week or two you don't see your supervisors much and they don't ride you at all. It's pretty nice. Just listen to your iPod all day and get a little exercise. Check into them. Might help out with the cash situation a little bit.

Good luck.

And other agencies will do so, as well. The office where food stamps are administered may be a place where you can get emergency rental assistance. How many days do you have?

if you just got the notice there may be places in your area that can help you stay in your place. here in NC there is such a place. sorry to say my friend who was evicted did not tell anyone until the marshalls were two days away from locking her out. go for the help NOW and you may even be able to stay put.

And with your positive, determined attitude, you WILL triumph. Might not be tomorrow, or even next week. Might not be before things get worse. But you WILL triumph. And you will have learned important things from your experience that will enable you to help others all the more so.

Trust that your future is bright and this is just a temporary diversion. And so it is.

And less cancer, emphysema, cardiac disease, etc.

Are you growing your own tobacco? $16 more a month?

Up here where I live, just a one pack a day habit would be at least $200 a month!

But anyway, you are right...there are better things to spend money on than something that will probably end up giving you some awful disease someday.

Hubby and I quit smoking over 15 years ago, and I'm so glad. We've got lots of really neat stuff we couldn't have afforded otherwise.

Oh, and I was evicted once too, years ago. It does a number on your self esteem, but, like you said, it will pass...

But I will definitely agree that the cigs have got to go. Depending on his habit, he could save hundreds of dollars a month, not to mention improve his health and possibly his outlook.

87. The fifteen dollars
is in addition to the money shelled out for cigarettes. At least, that's the way I'm understanding it...

But anyway, yeah...a person has to have something to look forward to...some little treat or another. Fifteen dollars plus maybe half of what gets spent on cigs would probably equal two nice little treats per week.

90. We've cut almost all luxuries out of our life, and it sucks.
Going out to dinner to even an Olive-Garden-level restaurant is a rarity. We almost NEVER see movies in theaters anymore (although I made an exception this year for Captain America, and I wasn't disappointed). I used to subscribe to several magazines and bought and read a book a week. Not anymore.

They'll take my (minimum-level) Netflix subscription when they pry it from my cold, dead hands, though. Since I haven't had cable in nearly 20 years, I don't mind the expense.

Like you said, you have to have something to look forward to in your life, something that helps you escape and experience enjoyment. Or life just isn't even worth living.

In fact, giving up smoking would leave more money for luxuries that aren't going to kill you. And you wouldn't even have to spend all the extra money. Just spend some, and save the rest...

you with assistance in your locality. Many churches and agencies that used to do this individually simply pooled their resources into one local office and the number to call is 211.
Its the same # for any city in the USA, but connects you with assistance in the area you are living.
call asap & find out what they can do for you
Best of luck

go down to you local family and children office and stand there until someone pays attention to you. Check on the internet. Someone gave me a list of information of helpful links once on here. There is help available but you have to find it. You made the first step by opening up to us.

I used to work as an apartment manager and we tried very hard to not evict people because it was a hardship on us also. Plus we felt bad about it. So you may be able to work something out where you pay weekly and/or they may be able to help you get help.

Sending you light and love. Be cooperative with the universe.

Believe it or not, a place exists where companies are hiring like crazy, and you can make $15 an hour serving tacos, $25 an hour waiting tables and $80,000 a year driving trucks.

You just have to move to North Dakota. Specifically, to one of the tiny towns surrounding the oil-rich Bakken formation, estimated to hold anywhere between 4 billion and 24 billion barrels of oil.

Oil companies have only recently discovered ways to tap this reserve. And along with the manpower needed to extract the oil, the town is now scrambling to find workers to support the new rush of labor.

31. Yes, but rent for a $400 a mo apartment jumped to $3500 a month. Price gouging is rampant and
You have to live a hundred miles from the area to afford to send home some cash while you are freezing your ass off in -60 weather.
Yes its doable but not for everyone. Face it, Winter in North Dakota is a fu**ing bitch.
I grew up there and will never go back. If you can exist in the Canadian tundra you'll do ok.
Maybe as the great big fat cat pipeline moves south of the ND border, the thought of going that way for a job would be do-able.

However, YES, the heads-up for jobs is appreciated. Just be aware of where you are headed. Winters are long and bitter cold, housing is outrageous and scarce. Dont even think of living in you vehicle this time of year, for very long cuz you'll freeze to death. Just the facts of life in that country.

34. Also,
I'd be careful with those truck driving jobs. A family friend worked recently with a subcontractor that fixed rigs. He was killed in an explosion last month. Obviously this doesn't happen every day, but for those thinking about ND be careful which jobs you're looking at and whether they cover your safety equipment.

I know this is a random comment, and don't mean to knock down Cid's comment because he's right that there are a lot of good-paying jobs up there right now. Just be careful.

24. Eviction isn't the end all be all it's made out to be
You'll lose self esteem only if you choose to. I was evicted twice because my landlords were realtor speculators who traded houses to each other to make more money. A lot like Wall Street. Every time one bought the house they naturally had to make a profit on it before selling it to another realtor. Since we had contracts they would just break them by evicting us so they could raise the rent on the next tenants. After having it happen twice we decided to buy a house.

I've also been through bankruptcy last year and was deep into the foreclosure process when my mortgage company decided to give me a loan modification. I can pay the mortgage but I struggle every month to make ends meet. It seems like it will never end.

I'm the 99% and so are you. Take as much pride as you can from that knowledge. You're not alone.

25. The problem is you are dependent on others for a livelihood
That is the problem with the world today. Our dependency needs to be shifted off of others, off of employers and back on the earth, the true provider of resources. Then you will discover the life of abundance you are seeking. I highly recommend reading "a different kind of luxury". It is the first step in taking back our independence and autonomy from others.

Do you have to live in an apartment or house where you pay the rent by yourself? What about sharing it with someone or more than one person to share the cost of shelter?

I wish there was something we could do but our income is WELL below the poverty level, and we are terrified of what the future holds.

We are in the same boat, except that we own our property.

40. Whenever I got fired from a job (because the manger's religion forbade my...
existence) or when my own father evicted me from the house I was renting from him (because I'm a transsexual and he decided to rent the house to 'his son', my brother) I always knew that the evil happening to me was because of the evil in the hearts of the men doing this. I knew that God would not have this. I found my way. It was rough at first, but dammit, I found it! I'm sure you could do it too! The hell with all these people who want to cause you harm! Fuck them! I found strength in getting active for GLBT causes. Is there a cause close to your heart? Unemployment? Homelessness? Get involved. It helps. I'm living prof! Still here and fighting for what I believe in!

41. Dragonbreath, I wish I could do more than tell you
that you are worth so much. I too have been going through more pain than I thought possible. I do cry, sometimes I feel better. I often consider dark things, but I KNOW it's a permanent solution to a (hopefully) temporary situation. God bless you and please hang in there. Like you, other people count on me, they love me. We have to overcome.

Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 05:12 AM by Obamanaut
that has been proven to lead to disease and/or death, makes one smell bad, modifies the sense of taste - this will help ease depression? Who knew?

Perhaps then smoking should be advised for the non-smokers who are depressed.

76. I had to stop smoking a hundred times before I finally stopped with help
I was lucky enough to be in the first clinical study and trial groups that used what is now called Chantix.

Nicotine is the worst addiction around and the hardest to quit. Known fact. So you're advice is really not necessary since you obviously don't have a clue.

81. Actually, I do have a clue. You say that nicotine is the worst addiction around. This is
Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 07:14 AM by Obamanaut
information that has been available for decades. That information is a clue available to everyone.

And yet, people continue to start smoking, despite the information about addiction. And you say that *I* don't have a clue. That caused an actual LOL.

Spending money that could otherwise go toward not being evicted, or food - and getting sympathy - and *I* don't have a clue. Another actual LOL.

that allows you to work from home pretty much any where in the country doing DSL technical support. All you need is a USB headset (purchased pretty much anywhere) and you can get started. That'll cut down on the gas you use to get to work.

60. So sorry! But don't give up. Are you registered with HUD?
HUD is a Federal agency who provides housing based on ability to pay. There is usually a waiting list, but it's worth getting on it, even if it takes a few months, even a couple of years.

Good luck!

65. You're in Texas, so you have some time.
Examine the 3-day notice you were given for non-payment of rent. It must specify you and your address just as it appears on your rental agreement. It must give a dated deadline to move out. If it does not, you are already in position to have your Justice of the Peace strike it.

If it's correct, then don't move out. Your landlord may use a lockout if he has no imagination and no knowledge of the law. If there is a lockout on your unit, there must be someone on premise 24 hours a day to allow you entry. That's the law. Call the police if that is broken - police will make them remove the lockout.

After the 3 days is up, your landlord will have to go the JP and get you subpoenaed for a hearing. Depending on local conditions, you might be served in 1 to 5 days. You will have 5 days from there to contest. On the last day, go down and contest it. Borrow the $70 filing fee by hocking something. Go later in the afternoon to file your reply - you'll get an extra day on them being served. You'll also pick up 5-10 days before the hearing.

At the hearing, the judge will decide against you, but you can often get the judge to give you a couple of days to get moved. This should gain you between 14-23 days to get some money together to move somewhere else more affordable, or seek help in a shelter or your next move. But it allows you to remain in place for 2 to 3 weeks while you get more organized than the sheriff showing up and giving you an hour to get out. That will happen if you ignore the first subpoena.

Good luck on finding a better situation. Hope this helps get you a little more time for transition.

I'm not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. This is just some sharing from personal experience.

the poster is adding up all the out-go ... in bills ... they owe every day ... equals to a aggregate profit of $9 per 8 hour work day. Not sure if they are including 'gas' to get to and from work every day ... which would really suck.

73. Ramen... wow
Brings back memories. Ten years ago I was living with my fiance and two kids and we practically survived on ramen for a year or more. Back then it was a dollar for a box of 12 packages. Cheap, filling, but damn do you get sick of it after a while.

Here I am now living with mom and dad and the best job I can find atm is working weekends washing dishes. Glad I had no pride to swallow when I moved back in.

As someone who also suffers with depression and anxiety disorder my advice is to hang on to that job if you can - any job is better than none... that's what I keep telling myself, at least. There's been a lot of good advice shared in this thread - I hope you have family or friends that can help out and offer you a place to stay if you need it. Don't give up, I know how hard it is to struggle by with next to nothing and I know what it's like to get an eviction notice. Things will get better in time... but no matter what happens, it's your attitude and your perspective that's going to keep you afloat. Do everything you can to stay positive and optimistic.

I'm so sorry for what you're struggling with.
