Marathon runner wins 3rd place, then outted by bus riders

Man DQ’d for taking bus during marathon

We’ve all been there — you’re out jogging, you’re feeling great, then the burn sets in. For Rob Sloan of England, that was the moment at which he did what many of us would do too: He called it quits and hopped on the bus.

The only problem with Sloan’s bright idea was that he was participating in the Kielder Marathon. And after he got off the bus, he hid behind a tree, waited for two participants to go by, and then rushed out to claim third place. Yes, you read that right. He hid behind a tree. Presumably with Elmer Fudd.

Sloan was, of course, outted after not too long by both spectators on the bus and participants in the race, not to mention by the obvious time discrepancy (He was the only runner to run faster in the second half of the race than he did in the first). Sloan is now understandably facing expulsion from the Sunderland Harriers running club to which he belongs.

8. Rosie Ruiz did it in NY, not Boston
Edited on Wed Oct-12-11 03:24 PM by Sanity Claws
She rode the subway for a good part of the way.

Edit --- I just googled Rosie and see she did it in both marathons.
Her philosophy: when you find a good thing, stick with it.

10. thanks
isn't it weird, we remember that 30 years later. This story now won't be seen as a big deal at all. I wonder why that is?

6. she's got her own wiki page!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosie_Ruiz

Rosie Ruiz Vivas (born 1953, Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban American who on April 21, 1980 crossed the finish line before all other women runners in the 84th Boston Marathon and was initially credited as the first place female competitor, but was later stripped of her title when it was found that she had not run the entire course.
