Tea Party favorite Perry flubs date of U.S. revolution
Source: CBS

Texas Gov. Rick Perry would like to avoid being compared to his gaffe-prone predecessor, former President George W. Bush, but he didn't help himself late
Tuesday when he suggested that the American Revolution took place in the 16th century.

Following a Republican presidential candidate debate at Dartmouth College, Perry made a stop at the school's Beta Theta Pi fraternity house a few blocks
away, where he spoke briefly with students and answered a few questions. One participant pressed the governor on the issue of states' rights.

Perry, a favorite of Tea Party Republicans, replied, "Our Founding Fathers never meant for Washington, D.C. to be the fount of all wisdom. As a matter of
fact, they were very much afraid of that because they'd just had this experience with this far-away government that had centralized thought process and
planning and what have you, and then it was actually the reason that we fought the revolution in the 16th century, was to get away from that kind of
onerous crown if you will."

The American Revolution, of course, was fought during the 18th century. In describing his personal story on the campaign trail, Perry has often said
he wasn't a very diligent student, and the Huffington Post has reported that he got poor grades in college, including a C in U.S. history.

Remember when as school kids we all learned about the Declaration of Independence being signed on July 4th 1576?
After all the Colonies were in rebellion against Elizabeth the 1st not George III because she came over on w/Christopher
Columbus and helped the Spanish in their war against FDR at the battle of Gettysburg and if wasn't for the Wright Brothers
inventing the F-15 jet fighter America would have lost the war.

This is the Republican base. That is who they aim for. There is really nothing we can do about it but leave them to them.

5. He had someone else attend his History classes in college,
I'm sure. Plus there's that problem of adding 1 to the date's century number. He may not have attended remedial math classes, either. Add those both up, and you have an error. So, it's OK.

In grammar school, when other kids were learning that stuff, he was putting girls' pigtails in the inkwell and playing pocket pool. That's my take on it.

41. I'm not kind, the asshole is my governor. I just know how well.
I knew from day one he would fuck up and say incredibly stupid things. I have been saying this since he first uttered the words that he was running for prez.

I feel sorry for the half wit. he really wants to be a grown up really bad but his greed and his opportunism always gets in the way.

He has officially swallowed his foot.

It's now the slow death spiral of a man who just isn't all that bright but tries so hard to prove to others that he is. I compare it to watching a dog trying to figure out how to get out from under a sheet. after a while the dog just gives up and lays down. so will cement head perry.

is there any evidence that "the founders" didn't want DC to be the nation's capitol, withh all three branches located there? Sounds silly to me.

21. Last time I checked Thomas Jefferson and James Madison
were part of the founding fathers and they (along w/others) wanted the new Nation's capital to
be in the middle of the country and not linked to any one state but to be an autonomous region
and the state of Maryland gave the nation that land for just such purposes.

BTW I used to be a history geek ..... :wow:

37. To be fair, I'm not sure that Perry was in Lexington, NH in 1574.
Though Cain may say next week that he was.

You just never can tell with Republican't history.

This is fun. Living in Boston, not far from the Freedom Trail, it's easy to get jaded with all the facts about the Revolution. Now, I have to learn a new set.

What's next? The Midnight Ride of Jesse Ventura?

is that they make up the reasons WHY the Revolution was fought.

According to the Revolutionaries, the reason was, first and foremost, taxation without representation in Parliament--and I take them at their word.

Other reasons, including cruel and unreasonable behavior of King George III to the colonies, are set forth in the Declaration of Independence--the parts no one reads or remembers. However, George III was insane. Nothing I know of cites the institution of the monarchy as a reason for revolting.

BTW, I take it back that no one reads the entire D of I. Someone reads it aloud to the public in Boston every July 4.

And on the very same balcony from which it was read in 1576, too!

Oh, wait, according to Bachman, that must have happened in New Hampshire.

Republican history is sure going to put a crimp in Massachusetts's tourist industry.

Hey, maybe that's why New Hampshire is for Romney! They need our tourist dollars because they have no state taxes!
